problem connecting to library server over internet
« on: July 19, 2006, 02:46:11 pm »

hi

i have 2 laptops, one running as the media server and one as the client. i can succesfully connect the client to the server using my home network (i.e. local ip address), but i am now trying to connect via the internet, using the external ip address of the laptop on which the server is running.  i have the library server running on port 85 and on the client i am entering  80.43.90.155:85 under location of the library, but i am getting the error message: Media Center failed to load the library '<name of library>' and will attempt to load the previously selected library'.  the ip address of the server is definitely correct.  i have turned off the firewall on both laptops, just in case it was a firewall issue.  am i doing something wrong?

thanks

If you use a router at home, you need to connect to its external address, then set up the router to forward packets on that port to your internal IP address of the server.  Here's a page that might help:

can't make a lot of sense of the page you directed me to.

i am trying to find out the external ip address of the router.  on the status page of my belking router it lists the external ip address of the laptop that i am using, a default gateway (212.74.111.xxx) and 2 DNS servers.  is the default gateway the external ip address of the router?

thanks

default gateway would be your internet provider's ip address that you access to get to the internet.
look for one that is labeled "WAN IP address" or similar.
Your LAN IP address would be in the internal ip address range such as 192.168.x.x.
Your laptop shouldn't have an external ip address at all.
Both laptops generally would have internal ip's only, and the router would have a WAN IP address that's external on the internet.
Plus, as was already mentioned, the router will need to be configured to forward traffic incoming on port 25 to the internal ip address of your "server" laptop.

ok, so the ip address of the router is 80.43.90.155, which is a dynamic ip address linked to a domain (nickharambee.com).  i have forwarded port 25 (tcp and udp) to the internal ip address of the server, but still can't connect to the library server.  exactly what format do i need to enter the location of the library?  at the moment i have http://80.43.90.155:85 because the library server is running on port 85 (presumably i could also use http://nickharambee.com:85).  why is it that i need to forward port 25 to the server laptop, and not port 85?

thanks

Forward port 85, not 25 (25 is SMTP mail)

leave off the http:// from the beginning (in the library manager).

What happens if you enter "http://80.43.90.155:85/" in a browser window?

ok, i took away the http and now i can connect and all seems to work well, though i have yet to test from a location other than home.

when i enter "http://80.43.90.155:85/" in a browser window i get an error message saying can't load page.  what should i be getting?

25 was a typo, meant 85.
