Numbers by Music - playlist suggestions, please!
« on: August 06, 2006, 05:46:27 pm »

For about 3 years now I've had a playlist that is based on tracks which celebrate numbers. However, in those 3 years, I've only managed to find 8 tracks! I was hoping that maybe people out there might have some suggestions to add to it...

The idea is that a number/numbers or numbers in general are the focus of any vocals in the track, or remain the focus for any significant part of it. For example, 'Aquarius' by Boards of Canada is one of the tracks; it only has vocal samples in it, but at one point a female voice starts reeling off numbers, including made-up ones such as 'sixtyten'... but so far the best example of what I'm talking about is 'New Number Order' by Shellac, in which the lyrics are all about changing the order in which we count numbers.

So if anything comes to mind, I'd love to hear about it. Here are the other 6 tracks I've got so far:

5-4-3-2-1 - Manfred Mann
Count Five or Six - Cornelius
The Number Song - DJ Shadow
One Two Three... Barbie Dolls - Pizzicato Five
Three - Massive Attack
Numbers - Smoke City

I'm counting on you guys  :D (sorry!)

Thanks for the replies, folks! Just to clarify what I'm looking for: Songs like 'Two Hearts' by Phil Collins are non-runners because it's about hearts, not numbers. I appreciate the effort though, and I've got a few good ones out of the suggestions so far. I'd be grateful for any more if people have any...

Well then, howabout "Revolution 9" by the Beatles?  The entire lyrics is George Martin entoning:

Number 9
Number 9
Number 9

. . .you get the idea.  Not exactly on my top ten list, but 9 is a number last time I checked.

BTW YouSue--"867-5309 (Jenny)" is by the immortal Tommy Tutone.

Perhaps these will do:

Listening to: 'Rock Around The Clock' from 'Rock Around The Clock' by 'Bill Haley & His Comets' on Media Center 11

Lyrics:
Quote
One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock, rock,
Five, six, seven o'clock, eight o'clock, rock,
Nine, ten, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock, rock,
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight.

Put your glad rags on and join me, hon,
We'll have some fun when the clock strikes one,
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight,
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight.
We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.

When the clock strikes two, three and four,
If the band slows down we'll yell for more,
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight,
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight.
We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.

When the chimes ring five, six and seven,
We'll be right in seventh heaven.
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight,
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight.
We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.

When it's eight, nine, ten, eleven too,
I'll be goin' strong and so will you.
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight,
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight.
We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.

When the clock strikes twelve, we'll cool off then,
Start a rockin' round the clock again.
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight,
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight.
We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.

Listening to: 'You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess' from 'You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess' by 'Yello' on Media Center 11

Lyrics:
Quote
One two three
A little fool I want to be
Two three four
You can give me more
Five six seven
I don't want to wait for heaven
Nine ten eleven
Going back to seven
Seven eight nine
Kann denn das noch sein?

We love it
We need it
Excess
We hate it
We want it
Express
We feel it
We get it
Not less
We need it
We love it
Excess

Listening to: 'Super (1,2,3) - Riscaldamento' from 'Super (CDS)' by 'Gigi D'Agostino & Albertino' on Media Center 11

- most of the song consists of the repeated "un, deux, trois... one two three..." chorus.

Lyrics:
Quote
Tarari and Tarara and Tarara and Tarari in the place to be!

Ladies and Gentleman,
you are ready to party with Alba and GgDag?

Ok...you are ready to party?
you are ready to rock the house up side down?

you are ready to Tarari and Tarara, Alba and GiGi Dag?
Tarari and Tarara, Alba and GiGi Dag .....

Un Deux Trois, Tarari Comme Ci Comme Ca
One Two Three Tarari the place to be ...

Ok, now put your hands in the air,

and wave them like you just don't care...

to tarari .. in the place to be

(Gigi D'Agostino)

We got GGDAG in the house...
Un Deux Trois, Tarari Comme Ci Comme Ca
One Two Three Tarari the place to be ...

(Albertino)

We got Alba in the house
Un Deux Trois, Tarari Comme Ci Comme Ca
One Two Three Tarari the place to be ..

if you are ready to party, with Tarari and Tarara...

Listening to: '107 Steps' from 'Selmasongs (Music from the motion picture Dancer in the Dark)' by 'Björk' on Media Center 11

Lyrics:
Quote
31, 35, 38, 42...
48, 51, 54, 58...

64.... 68, 69.... 75...
79, 83, 86, 89.... 93...
one hundred steps

There's also a version of "3 Is The Magic Number" (from the old School House Rocks movies) by Blind Mellon that's pretty spectacular.

I've attached a picture of John Lennon's meditation hut at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram in Rishikesh. Most of the songs on the "White Album" were written there, and refer to specific people and places at the ashram eg. "Dear Prudence", "Bungalow Bill" (whose bungalow is also at the site).

The pic is here: http://public.fotki.com/gpvillamil/india/rishikesh/027.html

Note the number of the hut.
