Greyed out icons...
« on: October 13, 2006, 03:15:09 am »

I really don't like them. I much prefer to see the full colour icon, all the time. It makes them sooo much easier for me to recognise and target.

I mean, look:

Just in case you were in any doubt as to what you had selected, there's a nice, heavy "this is what you selected" highlight bar in place.

Why go to all the trouble of making nice looking coloured icons to then go and mask them with greyscale 99.9% of the time?
I've never fully understood the fixation with them at all. It's right and proper, and very handy, that the list type tool bar buttons highlight the current state, and grey out the others, but the rest of the icons.... I don't know.... does anybody know....

why???

I don't know what to vote for... :)

On one hand it makes the tree cleaner (less "lot of different colors")
...but on the other it isn't as easy as before to identify some icons (hard to "understand" the flames on the  grayscaled version of the CD burning icon)

Perhaps fading the colors on when overing the mouse on the tree would be an acceptable trade off?

Agree, don't like them grey, faded I think would be better.

Also the expand/collapse arrows in the options trees don;t twist to show if a branch is expanded or not, makes it a little confusing.

on a more positive note:

I too think that the left hand options column should be a tree, and as each item is selected, it auto expands if it has children, and auto collapses when another parent is selected. Each selected item on the left would have related options shown on the right.

I'm not even sure if that's at all possible with the options system MC uses, but if it is, it'd be nice to try. The other thing some people might like, and has also been mentioned recently, is a 'help' button which opens the help file at the page dealing with that specific options sheet.

It's easier to choose your selection...

Greyed out icons should only be used for things that you cannot select...

We'll change it to the original colors next build.
