Howto: Export playlist and import into another DB
« on: November 01, 2006, 04:51:37 am »

Is it possible to export a playlist (whatever format) from one MC12 database, and subsequently import that file into an MC12 database on another machine?

I feel silly asking, I've not considered doing this until I decided to try using the new shared library functionality, and I want to get some playlists from my wife's PC into the "main" shared DB.

You can export a selected playlist from the File menu (File > Export Playlist). m3u format would be suitable for that.

I just tried the Export All Playlists option. From my library MC created 297 playlists and the process took several minutes (MC processed all smartlists to static playlists). This is a bit too much of processing for exporting only a few new playlists.

A feature request: Please add an option for exporting playlists that are inside a selected playlist group.

Thanks AlexB...but I already know how to export a playlist.

How do you go about importing it, so that it is "plonkable" into the playlists section of the new MC library? (Can you say that "plonkable"...hey! I like they way you say that!).

Plonkability is often requested.  We may implement it in a future version.

Oh, I thought that everyone has imported m3u playlists at times. They are supposed to appear in the "Imported Playlists" playlist group. At least on my PC they do.

Well...aren't I the duffer?

It works perfectly...you know I've never noticed that or used that functionality before...I've got to start eating breakfast...

Plonkability is now superfluous (hey...can you say "superfluous"?)

Now, if only we could do the same thing with smartlists...

Yes, when will smartlist import/export be provided?

It is good that the playlist export feature can interpret smartlists and create static playlists of them, but this does not help with copying the smartlist rules from a PC to another PC.

Copying already created complex rules one by one from MC to e.g. Notepad is rather awkward.

Besides the "export playlist group" option an "export smartlist rules to separate text files" option would help a bit.

Some of the playlists I exported as M3U show up under Imported Playlists, but NOT ALL of them do.  Also, I did nothing to put ANY of them in that list.  So can you tell me again how you get the M3U file playlists into MC 11 as MC 11 playlists?

Thanks.
