JRiver 1 -- Spammers 0
« on: December 12, 2006, 05:53:44 pm »

I think we've found a way to block the ******* Russian spammers (assuming they are Russian, which I do believe but....).

Bob got the new forum software to accept an add-on package that shows letters and asks the users to type them in when they register.  For 24 hours now, we haven't had a spammer register.  A few posts were done by spammers who registered before the change, but that's a big WHEW!!!

Knocking on wood now.

I solved that problem on the monkeysaudio website a long time ago.

Matt just doesn't know about it ... yet. ;)

Long live the Captcha :)

Until everyone requires it and the spammers just modify the script to download the image. Even then it will *still* require a human to do it.

I love the spam sketch... one of my absolute favorites of Monty Python. That, the lumberjack and the dead parrot! Amazing! That's certainly made my morning, thanks! :D

Hi Jim,

I think we've found a way to block the ******* Russian spammers (assuming they are Russian, which I do believe but....).
Here is a statistic from the originating countries of spam traffic. Interestingly enough the originating countries of spammers themselves is not exactly the same as the originating countries of traffic: more Russians on the spammer side, more U.S. on the traffic side.
http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/countries.lasso
Statistically it is quite logical that more spams comes from part of the world with more internet traffic and more connected machines.

BTW, I really like the new look of interact. Thanks for the update !

Have a good day,

Regards,

Christian

Who knows? Maybe they'd like Spam flavored dog food. Act now, before that post disappears!

Soon there will be no help in anything since there are sweatshops in China where they sit and spam forums manually like crazy...

Unfortunately it's not actually all that complicated.
There are already spam solutions out there that offer to decode captcha images and automatically input the characters as well.

Since they are usually created using standard libraries, I presume they've just worked out some way to reverse the process and 'best guess' the letters.

When I implemented it on my forum though thank god it cut them out too :)
