registration crashes MJB
« on: September 01, 2002, 11:23:20 am »

Just got my reg code this morning. However when I try to register MJB 8.0.360, it crashes.

Running XP Pro as Admin. Tried the restore page, tried double-clicking the .mjr file - still no luck.

Any ideas appreciated.

I don't know, but here are some things to look at.

Some browsers may have trouble.  IE should work.

Firewall running or security setting in IE?  Things that should work in these cases sometimes don't.  Zonealarm has been a problem but XP also has it's own defenses.

Are you running as the user you installed as?

Try a reboot, reinstall.

OK, it looks like the problem may be the user name.

Unfortunately, I registered on a Win2k machine as Administrator. But MJ is installed on an XP machine where I run as User with Admin privilege. I can't run MJ as Administrator on the XP machine because Administrator has a null password.

How can I get around the username problem?

Thanks,

Still working the username problem.

After further checking, I've discovered how to log into XP as Administrator (Ctrl-Alt-Del twice at XP login screen), but that doesn't help since I want to run MJ as User under normal circumstances, and I can't effect registration as Administrator.

So I still need some way to register MJ as User, though I was logged in as Administrator when I made the online payment.

I don't know what the problem is, but today is a holiday in the U.S.  Tomorrow maybe we can help.

Did you install it as admin?

if so loginto the user, and install it, then register

with MJ you must logon to each user and install MJ for it to work for that user.

Still not able to register MJ.

To recap: I installed MJ as User, would like to run it as User, however I purchased MJ from a different machine where I was logged in as Administrator (I was at work, but want to use it at home).

When I run MJ v 8.0.365 on my XP machine as User, and try to use the .mjr file to become licensed, MJ crashes.

Any help appreciated

I have no idea, sorry.  Did you try using your registration code to restore?  Use IE if you do.  The code is in your e-mail from "buy-button@jriver.com".

Yes, I did try that.

Maybe my guess is wrong, and it's not a username problem. But in any case, I can't figure it out.

I already did try an online restore also. I'm really stumped as to what to try next.

It isn't a user name problem.

It's possible that something in the network chain is dying.  Firewall, for example.  Try disabling and uninstalling any firewall running.  XP can also do some firewall type protection.

Virus checkers are another possibility.

Neither should be causing a problem, but they can.

OK, I reset my XP internet security level to default medium. I'm not running any virus software at the moment. My router does block ports below (I forget) but it shouldn't matter - I also tried restoring from the mjr file with no network connection, figuring that must be possible.

None of this works - MJ still crashes when I try to restore/register from the mjr.

It's a fairly new and clean machine, with nothing unusual running or in the configuration.

Short of reinstalling all of my system and software, I can't think of much more to try. And if it's a username problem, that wouldn't do any good anyway.

I think you're on the right track with the router and XP security.  Keep probing there.

OK, I turned off all port-blocking by the router, and took XP internet security to Low. MJ still crashes when I try to install the mjr key.

Leading candidate for the problem is still the username difference between the system with MJ and the system I registered with.

Any more ideas? It's getting pretty boring trying these workarounds and crashing MJ.

It isn't the username.  It could be a missing dll on your machine.  It happens.  Read the recent thread here on plugin-installation problems.

But I'm still guessing a failure somewhere in the networking.  Just a guess.

At this point, I've told you everything I can think of.  If you find anything really new, let us know, but otherwise I can't help any more.

You might try it on another XP machine to satisfy yourself that it is specific to the machine.  But get a fresh key.  Don't worry about restores.  We'll fix that later.

Read the thread on plug-in problems. Reinstalled XP Pro for good measure (a huge and needless pain, by the way). Got a fresh key over the internet. No virus or firewall software running. Default XP security levels. A completely vanilla machine.

MJ still crashes when I attempt to register.

JimH, thanks for your help so far, but I don't have the foggiest idea why I can't register this software.
