Media Center And Memory Cards
« on: April 05, 2007, 05:21:17 pm »

I Think I Am About Ready To Blow Up My Computer (Maybe)

I Bought A Dynex DX-CRD12 (All In One Memory Card Reader)

My Problem Was I Did Not Have A Internal USB Motherboard Connection (5Pin) So I Also Bought A USB PCI Card With A Internal USB Connector.

The Color Of The Wires Are The Same On The Dynex DX-CRD12 As They Are On A Extra USB Cable I just Cut the End Off (Shield, Black, ,White, Red, And Green).

I Am Thinking About Splicing The USB Male End Onto The Wires Of The DYNEX DX-CRD12.

I Am Hoping That Will Not Blow Up The Computer, And Allow The USB Memory Card Reader To Work So i Can Use It With My Camera's Memory Card When I Take Some Pictures In About 27 Or So Days.

Anyone out there with Experience with this?

The Computer Is Still Running...

It Seems From The Reading I Have Done Most If Not All USB Cables Have Standard Wire Colors.

So I Cut The Cable Off The DYNEX All In One Internal Memory Card Reader (It Was A 5 Pin Motherboard Female Connector), And I Spliced It To A USB Cable (Cutting Off One Of The ends).

I then Soldered Wire To Wire Of The Same Color And I Used Shrink Tubing Around Each Wire And A larger Shrink Tubing Around The 4 Wires (White, Black, Red, And green)

Note: There Is Also Shield, But It Is Also A Ground (Black)

I Took Out My Useless 1.4 Meg Floppy Disk Drive, Pushed The Card Reader In, And I Ran The Cable Out The Back Of the Computer And Into A USB Port.

Plugged It In And Installed The Drivers.

It Works....

It Shows Up As 4 Drives

Removable Disk (Sd/MMC/Mini SD/RS-MMC)
MMC/SD
CompactFlashI/II

I don't like how the cards show up even when no card is installed.  It clutters up my My Computer area.  Remember, I'm the one with ONE huge NAS instead of most ppl with a bunch of smaller drives, so I like everything simple and clean.  As little as possible.  I'm very picky about things like that.

Yep, it would have been better to show only if the card is inserted.

I was just tired of that 3 inch floppy setting there for no reason.

I'm not sure if you're saying the same concern I had, but when I had my multi-card reader installed, I knew I didn't have certain types like memory stick and so forth. With XP I simply went into the properties of the particular drives I knew I wasn't going to use and disabled them. Now they don't show up which makes my drive system cleaner.

That's not a bad idea.

Anything not disabled in the BIOS (FDC, Serial ports, etc.) I have disabled in the Device Manager; unused card reader devices and some other firewire devices.

You can also set your My Computer View to "Type" and it keeps Removable Devices seperate from "actual" drives.

Glad your reading away Sparta.
