High Quality Audio Under Vista
« on: June 02, 2007, 08:10:15 pm »

I'm trying to get a high-quality analog output from a Vista box to feed a headphone amplifier.

I'm having some problems, because I can't find M-Audio or AudioTrak Vista drivers, so I'm stuck with a motherboard soundcard.

Also, Vista adds lots of new DSP layers, but I want the opposite -- a pure audio path.  Even using ASIO4ALL, the Vista volume control is still working, meaning it has its fingers in the audio chain.

Does anyone have any tips for getting a pristine analog output under Vista?

Is there any hardware I could buy with a great DAC and Vista drivers?

Thanks for any help.

(It's been a rough night.  I also have to throw away my MP-101 UPnP box because that model doesn't work with Vista using MC or any other UPnP server.)

Can't help with the audio hardware/driver issues but I do have a thought on the MP-101 issue.

What about downloading Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (free software), installing XP on that, and then running the UPnP software on that virtual machine?  When I went to Vista, I did two things to ensure I didn't lose any critical software functionality:

First I set up a dual boot (which I haven't had to use yet - but might come in handy for older games).
Second I set up a Virtual PC with XP.   I made a copy of the 'pristine' XP install once I had it fully patched so I can quickly revert it back to it's initial state if needed.

See - you've got it backwards.... throw out Vista instead and your problems are solved :)

That's why i'm not moving on to Vista.

You can try (i haven't just read about it)

http://www.usb-audio.com/

They have a Vista-Beta Driver you can test.
It is a commercial driver you'll have to pay for it if it works for you.

quote:
t first it will run in demo mode and "beep" every 30 seconds.
On buying it you'll get a personal unlock-key that turns it into
a full version for Windows or a replacement driver for Mac respectively.
We encourage you to install the driver and have a try before you order.
