New home server - re-import or modify library?
« on: June 16, 2007, 08:40:28 am »

After installing Windows Home Server RC1 (great product so far!) my music files are now on a different server. Previously they were on \\mp3host\music, now on \\whs\music
The rest has remained the same, so my question is: should I import all tracks again (all 20K+ of them) or can I do a 'search & replace' in the library files for mp3host to become whs.
I'm afraid that re-importing (and rebuilding my library) may mean I lose album art, meta-data or playlist information, something I've spent countless hours in building...

Thanks for any help!

This will work:

- Create a library backup file (File > Library > Backup Library), close MC and disconnect or close the servers.

- Restart MC. The server files should be offline now.

- Select the files.

- Change the server path with the Find and Replace tool:
tick only the Filename (path) field
  Find what: \\mp3host\music\
  Replace: \\whs\music\

- Close MC, connect the server and restart MC. The files should now have new paths without any other changes.

Try this with a few files first.

You didn't mention where you keep the cover art files, but if they are in the album folders or in one unchanged folder the cover art links should be correct also after the base path change.

Excellent, that did it!
Cover art is still there too!
I'm so glad MC provides this level of flexibility.
