System crashes when trying to open Media Jukebox
« on: August 20, 2002, 05:59:20 am »

i just recently downloaded the free Media Jukebox program.  The system that I have downloaded in to uses Windows NT.  When I try to open Media Jukebox, the system crashes.  What should I do in order to prevent this from continuing?  I have not been able to utilize the program. Thank you.

If you mean that it crashes when you try to install MJ, I don't know.

If you mean that it crashes, after it is installed, when you first try to run it, this could be a video driver problem.

Are you running as the same user you installed as?

What version of NT?

THE SYSTEM CRASHES AFTER IT WAS INSTALLED. I CLICK ON THE ICON, AND THE SYSTEM CRASHES.  I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN THE SAME.  I AM USING WINDOWS NT VERSION 4.00.  I AM NOT SURE WHAT IS MEANT BY RUNNING IT AS THE SAME USER.

Kill the caps lock, please.  It's considered SHOUTING.

NT 4.0 should be OK.

User?  Check the Windows docs.  You need admin privileges.

I assume you tried a reinstall.  The file you have should be about 9 MB.  What version of MJ is it?  Downloaded here?  When?

Even if there is a problem with MJ, a system crash is an OS or hardware problem.

I am experiencing the same problem on my Windows NT 4.0 machine.  I get the blue screen of death every time I try to launch MJ.  I have a copy of MJ at home and it works fine on XP.  I have local admin right on my NT machine.  The NT machine is a Compaq EVO N600c.  Any suggestions?  I am looking to connect to MJ on my home PC.  Thanks.

jaybird & KevinC,

When MJ crashes the system, what does the screen say? Does it mention any specific driver? Are you running any unusual hardware?

NT will crash only when a driver crashes.

Nikolay,

This is the message at the top of the blue screen when NT crashes:

*** STOP: 0000000A (0x0397EAF4, 0x0000000C, 0x0000001, 0x80014CD6)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL***Address 80014cd6 has base at 80010000-hal.dll

I hope this helps.  As for hardware, I'm not running any out of the ordinary, just the DVD-ROM that came with computer, an HP laserjet printer and a parallel port ZIP drive.

A 0x0000000a stop in hal.dll is a serious driver or hardware issue. Make sure you have the latest NT4 service pack installed.

As a test you might also try disconnecting the parallel port Zip drive and disabling it's driver.

Folks,

I've got NT and have the same problems (BSOD, hal.dll), and have spend some considerable time solving them with JohnT.

The problem is the generic driver, period, end of story.

MJ 8.0.366 will install and work just fine with a registry patch that disables the generic driver.

For whatever reason versions after that will NOT install or work.

Maybe if we take a peek we can find some comonality besides NT (Processor, BIOS, chipset, CD-RW, blah blah blah.)

Sorry, that was a bit thick.  Better to say that it seems very similar the problems that I've experienced.

Alonso,
Hey, moderation!  I'm impressed.

8.0.366 is yet to be.  8.0.336 maybe.

Nikolay and I had a short talk about whether NT 4.0 might have a bug.  Definitely not, was his opinion.

Alonso,

What kind of registry patch are you talking about?

I'm not sure, but try changing this registry value from 0 to 1 or vice versa.

As the sainted James Bou-fey would say: "I'm growing older of not up"  Ok, maybe just a little.

Right, .336.  Later versions BSOD on install.  I guess something changed that causes the generic driver to get actived on install.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Music Exchange\1.0\Media Jukebox\CD Writer\AvoidGenericDriver

That's the one, change the value to 1

A clean install with .336, then change the value and presto! everything works.

There was another guy here recently who also has a Dell with a Celeron 550 what had the same problem.
