Re-installed Windows 98 - now all is quiet
« on: August 19, 2002, 03:32:28 pm »

I recently installed a cable modem and had a problem with my Windows registry. On advice from my ISP I re-installed Win98 and now I don't have a sound coming out of my speakers when I try to play MP3 files on MJ.

Has my sound card lost its way? Any suggestions?

Check in "Control Panel / Multimedia to see if your soundcard is still enabled. I reinstalled my "Operating System" with an HP recover disk which reset the computer to it's original out-of-the-box configuration. You will have to reinstall every program that doesn't come with Windows (or HP in my case) even if it's still on the hard drive.
Some advice that I wish I had followed: take this opportunity to upgrade to XP. You are going to have to do a lot of bullcrap anyway, it may as well be with a better OS at the end. With 98SE installed, you can upgrade to XP Home for about $100.
Remember, I haven't done that but everyone seems to be in agreement on the disparity between 98SE and XP.
