Author Topic: Library conversion fails, "Please make sure that the path in your library ....."  (Read 3915 times)

I've used MC for several years now because it's simply the best.
Recently I've began to use the library server which works like a charm as long as I don't try to use conversion.
I don't need conversion as long as I'm within my local network, but I would like to use it also externally with my mobile broadband laptop. Since thats a pretty slow connection I need to convert the songs to a lower bitrate.
But.... I cant get it to work  :'(
Conversion works ok when I locally convert from wav to MP3 or when I transfer to my MP3 player but not when playing through the server.
I can play any song from the server if I don't use conversion.
If I try to use conversion I get an error saying: "Media center encountered an error while trying to play the last several files. Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location"
I tried with an uninstall of MC and cleaned the registry from all JRiver contents, did a reboot and installed again.
Still the same problem no matter what kind of conversion I try :-(
In the log file on the client I see this:
"Playback: CWaveFeederHelper::GetForceDirectShow: Returning FALSE for file http://192.168.1.66:8123/E:^5cMy Music^5c@Music^5cVan Morrison........."

All back slashes are written as ^5c is that ok?

Does anyone have a clue what's going on?

Hi Lasse,

Check the server for error messages. Also, make sure the MP3 encoder is installed ON THE SERVER.

Thanks for trying,

But: been there done that.

Lame is installed on the server.
I have no problem doing conversions on the server.
Wav to MP3, Flac to MP3  you name it ;-)

What settings are you using on the client for conversion?

These are my settings on the client

Library Server Conversion
Conversion: Always convert audio
Encoder: MP3 Encoder
Encoder Settings.....
VBR Encoding with Target Quality: Normal

I can use the same settings for conversion without any problems when I transfer to my MP3 player.

Just to let you know, I have similar problems. I can't seem to track down exactly what the problem is, but I continue to experience problems with the media server and my feeling is that it has something to do with the conversion:

Lasse - please post your system info here.

And I need to make sure I understand. With your laptop connected to Library Server, you can play any track without conversion. But when you play with conversion it fails. What I mean is:

Connect from the laptop to the server.
On the laptop: tools->options->LIbrary and turn off conversion.
Play a track, verify it works.
On the laptop: tools->options->Library and turn on conversion.
Play the same track, verify it fails.

gummbah - any more testing results? "Incorrect version" messages?

Yes you understand my problem perfectly ;-)

I can connect to the library server from my laptop and play any track if I turn off Library server conversion on the laptop.

If I change Library server conversion on the laptop to "Always Convert".  I can't play any track on the laptop.

I'm stumped... it works fine for me here.

Make a network sniff of the failure:
http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Sharing_Plug-in_Debugging_Hints
and e-mail me: gateley @ jriver.com
Do not make a sniff of successful playing: that is too big a sniff.

I'll take a look.

For some reason it is not converting. What does the Library Servers status page show?

As a simple test, can you copy the file to something without any special characters (@, #, [, or ]) and try listening to the new one via Library Server?

I tried that but same result.
The server is running on a Swedeish XP system and we have some strange letters with dots and circles above ;-)
For example the Windows Temp directory is located in a folder which contains weird Swedish letters.

On the server, what happens if you try to convert a file to MP3?

No problems with conversions locally on the server.

Conversion works ok on the server when I locally convert from wav to MP3 and when I transfer tracks to my MP3 player.
But when I try to play them on the client from the server with conversion it fails.

Are both the client and the server running the same version of MC?

Yes they are.
I have reinstalled cleaned registry and rebooted all machines and then reinstalled.

This is the server

Are the encoder and the settings for it the default?  In other words, have you done anything special with encoding on the server?

I have changed all conversions from WMA to MP3  (VBR Normal) both on the server and the client
for
CD ripping
File Conversion
Sound Recorder

And on the client I use
for Library Server Conversion
Always convert audio
MP3 Encoder
VBR Normal

If I change to
Don't Convert Audio
I can play tracks on the client

On the Server I also have
Library Server Conversion set the same as on the client.

But I believe that setting is of no importance in this case?

open a command prompt (start->run cmd)
and copy a file to the temp directory:

copy file.mp3 C:\Documents and Settings\Lasse.LASSE-MC\Lokala inställningar\Temp\JRTemp\file.mp3

See if that causes an error. You can copy any file you wish (in place of file.mp3).

Let me know...

I'm unable to do that because as far as I can remember a folder name under the CMD prompt can't exceed 8 characters. Correct me if I'm wrong.

One has to use the DOS "nick-names"  Docume~1 Lasse ~2 Lokala~1  or something like that.

I can copy any file from anywhere to that directory using Total Commander, but that's not what you asked for. Right?

I believe you can use long names. Enter the following:

copy <file> C:\D

now hit tab until it looks like:
copy <file> "C:\Documents and Settings\"

Backspace through the double quote, enter "L" and repeat tab again, continue.

But if Total Commander can copy them, I'm confused.

The error is "File not found" when it is trying to create it. This normally means you don't have privilege to write it. But if Total Commander
can copy to that directory, you do.

At the moment, I'm at a loss... any hints you can provide might help

Of course, You're right.
When I managed to type it correct it worked ;-)
I can copy files manually as well to that folder.

What about the temp folder which is specified in
Settings/File Location/Temporary Files/

I have there
C:\Documents and Settings\Lasse.LASSE-MC\Mina dokument\Min musik\Temp\

But I've never seen anything in that folder ??

The other day I decided to try this again to see if the new builds might have changed things.

And.........  it worked  :D

Besides new builds of MC the only thing that have changed is that I uninstalled Norton Internet Security on my laptop and replaced it with ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

And now I can listen to the music from my media Center PC on my laptop anywhere with my mobile broadband connection thanks to the library conversion.

But I don't know what caused the problem.    Norton?  Probably.
