iPod could not be properly identified under MC12 (build 12.0.279)
« on: September 04, 2007, 11:29:15 am »

I am unable to get my 10GB, 2nd generation iPod to be properly recognized under the latest build of MC 12 (12.0.279). I am currently receiving the following error when I attach the iPod device:

Your iPod could not be properly identified.

Please check for an updated version of Media Center.

iPod type: "xxxxxxxxNGH", 0, 0

(the x's are actually the full serial number for the iPod, but it would appear that under MC11 only the last 3 digits of the serial are needed to ID the iPod.  However, by all accounts of posts made to this forum, it would appear that this mapping is not needed under MC12 (unsure of this).

The iPod is recognized as an external drive under 'My Computer' under the 'Drives and Devices' drill down, but manually dragging and droppng files directly to the drive does not get them recognized within the iPod menuing system, eventhough they do appear on the device when it is browsed via the MC interface. The iPod is currently updated to v1.5 firmware.  I have tried a restore to factory settings as well as reinstalling and deinstalling iTunes to no effect (iTunes works fine with the device, but I don't use it to manage my media).

I used to get the same error on previous versions of MC (can't remember if it was 11 or 12 -- its been a while since I have updated the iPod), but after clicking OK to the error message, the software would still recognize the device and place it properly under 'Drives and Devices', where it could be managed and synched properly. Either a recent update to the iPod firmware or the MC software has completely broken the connectivity between the device and MC (aside from recognizing it as an external drive). The model number for the device is A1019 and the last three digits of the serial number is NGH, if that is still relevant to MC12.

Any ideas?

Update: iPod could not be properly identified under MC12 (build 12.0.279)
« Reply #1 on: September 04, 2007, 11:40:30 am »

I attached the iPod to my laptop system running version 12.0.185 of MC and I get the error message (without ideintifying the serial number) and when I click OK, the device is recognized directly under the 'Drives & Devices' drill down. So it would not appear to be an iPod firmware problem.  It is either something with the more recently updated version of MC or a general drive mapping/allocation problem on the desktop system.  Any help would be appreciated.

Under the Options section for Handhelds, you can tell MC to "redetect devices".  Try that.

I tried that originally. I am asked to confirm that I wish to discard all current setting, which I do. The error message about being unable to identify the iPod is repeated and we're back to square one.

Maybe try updating the iPod.

I tried all of that. The odd thing is that the iPod works (for the most part) with MC 12.0.185 on another system. I still get the 'can't identify' error (though w/o the serial number specified), but the device does show up under 'Drives & Devices' and I can manage it. I would like to get it working on my desktop (running v12.0.279) because at one point it was working. I have a feeling some upgrade between 185 and 279 has created this problem so if I upgrade my laptop to the latest release (which I'd eventually like to do for a variety of reasons), I'll be out of luck on that system as well.

Any more thoughts? Is there any kind of debugging I can turn on to provide additional information as to why this is happening?

The same version of MC on both PC's would be nice.

Try renaming the itunes.db file on the ipod to itunes.tmp or similar.

How would you do that? When I browse the device as an external drive, I only see a 'Calendars' and 'Contacts' folders. The 'Calendars' folder is empty while the Contacts folder has a couple of vcf files. I have enabled Windows Explorer to display hidden system files, but that has not revealed anything additional.  Obviously there must be something else there that stores the iPod content, but it doesn't appear to be exposed via the external drive connectivity.

I was able to load a couple hundred songs onto the iPod from the laptop system, but I still can't get it to be recognized by the desktop one running build 279.

We didn't have that serial number in our map. The next build (12.0.320) should be able to ID that iPod correctly.

Is there a model number listed in Settings > About on the iPod?

Thanks. Hopefully that will solve the problem. The model number is not listed under the 'About' menu option, however it is on the back of the unit: A1019.
