iPod Classic and nano status
« on: September 18, 2007, 09:56:25 am »

It's working for us, but a couple of users have reported it doesn't work.

We have an 80GB classic.

Please stand by.

[Edit-- Requires build 335 or later.  Always check the top of the MC12 board for the latest if you're having trouble.]

Thanks for the quick response in addressing the new iPods, Jim and the rest of the MC developers.

If you need a tester for the new nano's, I'd be more than happy to help. It's a black nano with the same model # and last 3 serial that is listed in the sticky post.

I don't know if this helps or not but after my initial problem with the existing database, after resetting the iPod I've been able to transfer music and video from MC to the iPod without any problems. So, maybe the problem is compatibility with an existing iTunes database.

The only thing I see is that the album cover/video previews normally shown on the right hand side of the iPod menus are not there. Coverflow works but the preview in the menus do not.

iPod Classic no songs after sync [found to work on XP, not on Vista]
« Reply #4 on: September 18, 2007, 06:04:13 pm »

I just got my 80gig classic ipod today. I have tried to copy songs to my ipod using MC12 (12.329) with no joy. MC recognizes my ipod, and I can transfer songs to my ipod, but after I eject the ipod, it says that I have no songs. The ipod also shows that I have less space, meaning that I know the songs are on the ipod, it just won't show them to me. I even got to a screen where MC asked my to fix or make a database. When I mount the ipod again in MC, and go to my ipod in drives/devices, all the songs that I transfered are there.

When I go to itunes, it says that it detected a database problem. After I restore, and sync with itunes, my ipod works. I am thinking that it is a MC/ipod database problem.

Please help me to get this to work as it is driving me  :o

Can you re-install 329 and reboot?  Start with a working ipod and then test again.  This should be working now.

If it doesn't work, please report how many files and how much space is used on the iPod.

I went to itunes and restored to factory settings.

I uninstalled MC, then reinstalled MC.

Then I rebooted.

Same problem. I put 14 songs on it and it said I used 200 MB.

Can you post a description of the device and the last three characters of the serial number?

It may not be getting recognized as a classic.

It is being recognized as a classic. I posted my info in the ipod sticky thread at the top.

Update:

I went to my XP machine and it now works fine. It was my Vista machine that was giving me problems. I guess this is just a Vista issue?

The Classic (thank you J River!!!) seems to have a transfer speed about twice as fast as the generation 5.0

What new iPods are working for people?
« Reply #10 on: September 19, 2007, 05:57:03 pm »

What, of the newest generation of iPods, are working for everyone (with Media Center)?  How many people are using the classic?  I think the Nano works well, too.  But what about the iPod Touch?  And of course, the iPhone?

With build 329, the classic and nano will work (maybe not on vista yet).

The touch and the iphone won't.

Does the breakthrough of finding the hash value or whatever was discovered recently only help the classic and nano?  Are the touch and iPhone handled completely differently compared with the other iPods?  In other words, iPhone support was not likely a while ago ... nor was Classic support.  This discovery allowed classic support.  Will this discovery in any way help with the iPhone (and touch)?

Odd issue with MC12 and ipod classic
« Reply #14 on: September 19, 2007, 08:01:02 pm »

If I select any podcast to sync, MC wants to sync my entire collection even though I only have 200 songs and 1 podcast selected.  Unselect the single podcast and it only wants to sync 200 songs.

Also I noticed that some of my albums that show album art in MC are not getting synced with proper album art but instead getting the MC logo.  which is another problem, I know this was asked back in the MC11 days but can we have it NOT add the MC logo to tracks with no artwork.  This is even more annoying with the ipod Classic because the classic puts in artwork that is media type specific if no artwork is found and this does not work if you have a bunch of MC logos.

I can attest that the new nano's, Vista, and MC don't work together. I tried out the latest build of MC tonight and loaded all my music through MC. I ejected the nano and got the "0 Songs" message on the screen.

Is there any hope of getting this working on Vista?

Was there any special process to get your classic working under Vista? I plugged in the ipod, launch MC, right clicked on the player and selected Initialize. I then sync my music, but the iPod did not recognize the songs.

I am running Vista Ultimate and all the standard settings.

Hi Osho, So, you are not having any issues with the wrong album covers showing up?

Have you gone back to Itunes at all? (if not, don't as this might create album cover problems for you).

The only problem is for future firmware updates, you will  need Itunes and that may mess things up.

iPod Classic black 160 just filled with 128 GB music (18,684 songs).  I can't say beyond my random checking, but Cover Flow appears to be working fine for me.

I am not having any issues with the wrong album covers showing up. I have all album covers embedded inside tags in MC12. *Maybe* that's the reason.

I haven't gone back to Itunes at all.  I agree that I will have to go there for firmware update (I am waiting for a firmware fix for compilations). I will upgrade firmware with iTunes. If I see problems after that, I plan to remove all my music on iPod and resync from scratch with MC12. I have enabled cache for storing the conversion so it should be much quicker to resync second time in MC12.

I too have all the covers embedded into the files, I think it's going back to Itunes that scrambles this, in which case it might happen after a firmware update.

The thing is with 150gb of space, re-installing the data takes a while, and puts uncessary wear and tear on the ipod drive.

I thought this was interesting about how hard Apple is trying to make it for 3rd party developers to work with iPod and iTunes. Check it out.

Interesting article.  It's good to see that Apple's behavior in this regard, which has been going on for a LONG time, is finally getting a little more press.

Thanks for the link.

Vista Users,

We are seeing some problems related to Vista's security layer (UAC) and our device management system. We are currently working on it. In the meantime, please run MC as an administrator. Right click on the MC icon and select "Run as Administrator".

This will better identify your iPod and it will allow you to use MC to manage the new iPod nanos and classics.

Very good article.  I really liked the Powerpoint comparison at the bottom.  It is amazing--all the time spent trying to stop others from freely using a device.  It introduces so much more complexity that can even cause problems with Apple's own software!  Any added complexity increases the chances of failure.

I so wish I had read this before trying out MC.
I downloaded the trial version and tried to add a couple of albums to my 160 Classic.
I am using Vista
Everything seems OK looking at MC but after ejecting my Ipod there is nothing on it. !
Although it does say over 80 gig is used !
Looks like its back to Itunes

He actually meant "332" rather than "232," meaning he wanted you to try a NEWER version than 329.  Since he wrote that response, however, 335 has been released, so THIS is the version you should try.

Here is a link to the thread containing the newest version as of this moment.

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=42767.0

If in doubt, just download the version from the "newest build" thread at the top of the "Media Center 12" forum.

Does MC still need to "initialize" the new Classic iPods?  I've been doing some testing, and when I plug in a newly restored iPod, MC never asks me if I want to initialize it, and it never indicates that it does this automatically.  Is this an MC change, or an iPod change, or ?  Is MC just doing this automatically the first time a blank iPod is connected?  In the past, it's always "asked" about doing this.

Thanks,

Larry

Initializing should not be necessary.

Does this apply to ALL iPods now, or just to the new Classics?

Also, is there anyproblem with using a re-initialize to clear the iPod, or should it not be used at all.

Finally, if initializing is no longer needed, why is it still in the menu?

Thanks for clarifications on these,

Initializing is a quick way to clear the iPod which may be handy in day to day use and also whenever Apple changes the database structure.
