This is the third time I have posted about this.  Each time, I have been advised to try the next latest release, and it seems to work initially.  Then I was advised to uninstall completely, and reinstall removing all libraries as well.  That also worked briefly.  But this problem always comes back.  Now whenever I launch MC, I have an album stuck in Now Playing.  When I right-click and choose "Clear Playing Now", I get the following error message even after a reboot :

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
program d:\Media Center 12\Media Center 12.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way.  Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Also, I get this same error message often when I quit MC.  After letting it play MP3s all afternoon, I click the close button (upper right hand corner X), and it crashes.  Once again, I will download the latest build (I am running 338).  Once again I will completely uninstall, and then reinstall, and that will once again (most likely) fix my problem for a few weeks.  Can you write me some debug so that I can determine the root cause of this issue?  Is there any other way to troubleshoot this issue?

This is a relatively new install of XP SP2 (reinstalled from scratch to a brand new HD a few months ago).  I install very little software onto it to avoid these types of issues.  This is my only application which is crashing constantly.  I am wondering if it has anything to do with my 650i chipset (or perhaps my onboard audio solution), because I didn't have this problem with MC10 on my old Athlon with an SBLive card.

Any help appreciated, I am fantastically frustrated.

Please post the tail end of the previous log after a crash here.  You can enable logging in Help > Logging.  The log should have the word "crash" in it.

Thanks!

What other software are you using with MC?  Visualizations, third-party plug-ins, etc.

Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I just uninstalled 338 (uninstalled libs as well), and installed 374.  As before, it is working again.  But this time I have enabled Logging as I know from the past attempts, it is only working for the time being.  Here is my system info from the present installation.  It should be exactly the same as the previous installation because I have been having this issue ever since I upgraded to MC 12.  After the first series of crashes, I uninstalled the few plugins I had tried out, and have never reinstalled them.  This is approximately my 4th reinstallation.  So theoretically, the last two versions should be clean :

How about visualizations?  MusicLobby, NetRemote?  Skins?

What else could be non-standard?

Old installations of MC11 or earlier?

It's almost certainly not an MC problem, or we'd be seeing it repeatedly.

The fact that it runs for a while, then seems to crash suggests a possible memory leak somewhere.  Even a driver.

It now happens with the newly installed 374.  But this time I have logging turned on.  :) I do not see the word crash in the output.  But to make it easier, I renamed the massive log files which also recorded all the imports, then clicked Help - Logging - Click to Reset Log file.

Then I tried to unload what was in Playing Now (right-click Playing Now - Clear Playing Now)
I get the same error message immediately.

I can also see that two new log files were created, Log.txt and Previous Log.txt.

I can post as much as you like of the "Previous Log" file, but I don't see the word crash in it.  However, I can see that it did record something about the problem :

>>>>How about visualizations?  MusicLobby, NetRemote?  Skins?
1). Don't use visualizations (LCD is almost always off when MC is playing)
2). No MusicLobby
3). Yes.  I use 0.99 of NetRemote so that I can control MC from my Thinkpad.  I turn on the Media Server, and set it to port 20002.  You may have something here.  I'll turn off Media Server and stop accessing it with NetRemove and see if I can reproduce the issue.
4). I don't use any custom skins.  Just leave the default skin when it is installed.

>>>>What else could be non-standard?
Nothing that I am aware of.  I haven't added any plug-ins since I first started crashing.  What I have now is the default install of 374 with no add-ons.

>>>>Old installations of MC11 or earlier?
I used to run MC10, but it was installed to a different drive.  I originally did try an upgrade, but when I started crashing, did a brand new installation to a diff dir with MC12.

>>>>It's almost certainly not an MC problem, or we'd be seeing it repeatedly.
Yeah, I was wondering if it was specific to my hardware.  It's not that unusual, but the 650i chipset only came out in 2006 so it is fairly new.

The fact that it runs for a while, then seems to crash suggests a possible memory leak somewhere.  Even a driver.
>>>>Interesting.  I'll try out the NetRemote angle first and let you know.

Try posting on the promixis.com site in the NetRemote forum.  Make sure you're using a combination they recommend (NR/MC).

Ah ha!  Sorry for the multiple posts, but the problem is with Remote Server.  If I choose Tools - Options - Startup Actions - Run Remote Server on Port - and then put in 20002, I can recreate this problem.  I select a large number of MP3s, add them to Playing Now, then right-click and try to remove them (from Playing Now).  Crash.

Perhaps this is why you don't see this problem reported a lot.  I am not sure how many people use the Remote Server option.  For me, it is the reason I bought MC in the first place.  I spend all day staring at my Thinkpad pushing electronic paper, so it is incredibly handy (and cool) to be able to control MP3 playback from my desktop's speakers with the desktop's LCD panel off, directly from my Thinkpad.  I use NetRemote 0.99 which pulls up the album art, and the tag info into a window and provides full control of playback (skip to next song, volume, mute, etc.).

I have been using NetRemote for as long as I can remember, and certainly for a number of years with MC10.  It has always been setup to use port 20002.  Also, I have Norton Protection Center on the desktop and MC12 is configured to allow communication on any port.  I have a LinkSys WRT54GS router in between the Thinkpad and the desktop acting as both a router and a hub.  Port 20002 is listed in the Port Forward table with the desktop's static IP.  It has been configured like this for 4 or 5 years (since whenever MC10 came out, I may have even had MC9 before that, can't remember).  It is only since the upgrade to MC12 that I have had this Remote Server crash.  That is not to say it is MC12's fault, but it may be.  Also between MC10 and MC12 I upgraded my entire computer, and reinstalled XP from scratch.

This is as close as I have ever been to resolving this!  Any ideas on how we can narrow it down a little more?  I would really like to continue using the Remote Server, it is my favourite MC feature.

Thanks,
DD.

I just tried this and can't duplicate a problem.  I added about 5000 files, started playback, then cleared Playing Now.  How long does it take?

Were you running NetRemote?  Can you duplicate the problem without NetRemote?

Anything else running on that port?  Did you try another port?

Try posting on the promixis.com site in the NetRemote forum.  Make sure you're using a combination they recommend (NR/MC).

I'll have to post faster, you keep beating me to the punch!  I am using the free version of NetRemote they had available on their site for many years (0.99).  Since then, they were bought by another company, and no longer offer the free version for download.  Now they want 50 bones for it and will only answer support related questions about the latest 50-dollar version.

You may be right, this old version of NetRemote could be the problem.  I'll keep testing with it.  However, I know MC10 worked perfectly with this version so there must have been a change to the code somewhere within MC12 which caused the error message to appear.  Since I don't have a PocketPC, I can't really make use of any of the features available in the 50-dollar version of NetRemote to make its purchase worthwhile.  I assume you changed your code to work better with the new version?  If I find that it is indeed the communication between NetRemote 0.99 and MC12 which is causing the crashes, is there anything we can do?  I am perfectly willing to try a different product which can control MC the way NetRemote can, or to test any code you send me.  I will certainly understand if you can't change your MC12 code to work with such an old product as NetRemote .99 (Help About lists 2003 as the copyright year), but I was wondering if the change you did make was inadvertent, then perhaps it is just as easy to change it back, or change it so that it works with both versions.

Thanks for the replies thus far,
DD.

Ha!  It only crashes when Netremote is running on my Thinkpad!  If I turn off NetRemote on the Tpad, I can clear the Playing Now just fine.  That's interesting.  NetRemote actually controls the playback perfectly, if I remember to shut it down before I clear Playing now, I can work around this problem and continue to use NetRemote.  Is there any way to fix this permanently (assuming you want to since it is such an old version of NetRemote) ?

Thanks again,

To answer your other questions, no nothing else on that port.  It is dedicated to NetRemote and MC.  I have tried other ports, as soon as I configure NetRemote to the new port, I can duplicate the problem.  I can send you the version I have of NetRemote if you like, if you want to try to reproduce the issue.  When I downloaded it, it was offered free by its creator Benjamin Sweet as "freeware / use at your own risk" deal.  It has worked really well for 4 years but like any good software out there, got snapped up by another company.

I'm sorry, but you're going to have to buy NetRemote or not use it with MC12.  The old version is definitely not compatible.

You could still control MC by running RemoteServer and connecting to it with a browser.

http://ipaddress:port will work.

JimH, thanks for you efforts on this problem.  This is without question, the best support experience I have ever experienced for any software product I have ever purchased.  I have root cause, plus the workaround you suggested above which does exactly what NetRemote used to do for me, and all of that in less than a day.  I also see that there is another follow-up post indicating there is an alpha of the Enhanced Remote Server which I am only too happy to try out.

Problem solved man!   I have retired my ancient version of NetRemote and am happily controlling MC via browser with no stability problems.  Futhermore, the HTML page actually gives me more control since I can pick any MP3 from the Now Playing list.  With NetRemote, I didn't have that level of control, if I didn't like the song which came up on random play, I could only skip to the next one.  Can't tell you what a relief it is to know for certain what was causing my crashes!

Thanks again,
DD.
