Support for Archos 605 [working now]
« on: November 27, 2007, 05:15:00 pm »

Does anyone have any experience (good or otherwise) using MediaCenter with the Archos 605?
I'm primarily interested in synching music (including Napster content), playlists, pod/vidcasts and videos.

Thanks for any input.

MC can sync WM DRM content from Napster.

Does the device mount as a removable disk?  In other words, can you copy files to it from Windows Explorer.  If so, it will probably work.

You could try a search for other Archos devices here.  Posts may provide clues.

Thanks for the information Jim,
Yes, it supports both hard drive and windows media mode.  I've read on some of the Archos posts that they handle playlists a bit differently (I think it's maybe a proprietary .m3u format).  That's why I was asking about the playlists support.

A couple of follow on questions - is there anyway under the "Export All Playlists" to:
  - specify relative pathnames in the .m3u files
  - target a different directory than the default directory
  - use some scripting to alter the playlists during/post export

I gotta say, I try pretty much every media organizer/player that comes along - and none of them even come close to what you guys have put together.  I get SO much enjoyment out of my media with your program (been using for about 4 years now).  Great job and keep up the excellent work!!!!

A big fan

Thanks for the kind words.  Spread the word!

I'm not sure on the playlists.  MC supports m3u playlists.  You would normally just check the playlist to be synched with MC or drag it there, and not use export.

Maybe someone on an Archos forum might try the MC12 trial version to help.

Deckard,

If you send us a playlist that works on the 605 (when functioning as a removeable drive) and let us know where it was located. We will probably be able to hook you up.

Hey Rick,

Playlist (.m3u) files are stored in the Playlists folder.

Archos 605 m3u Format is:
#UTF8: /Music/Artist/Album/Track# Artist - Title.MP3
/Music/Artist/Album/Track# Artist - Tiltle.MP3

(Linux OS - hence the "/" versus "\")

A sample of a .m3u file from the Archos 605:

#UTF8: /Music/James Blunt/All the Lost Souls/01 1973.M4A
/Music/James Blunt/All the Lost Souls/01 1973.M4A
#UTF8: /Music/Rooney/Calling the World/06-Are You Afraid.MP3
/Music/Rooney/Calling the World/06-Are You Afraid.MP3
#UTF8: /Music/Matchbox Twenty/Exile On Mainstream/I'll Believe You When.M4A
/Music/Matchbox Twenty/Exile On Mainstream/I'll Believe You When.M4A
#UTF8: /Music/James Blunt/All the Lost Souls/02 One of the Brightest Stars.M4A
/Music/James Blunt/All the Lost Souls/02 One of the Brightest Stars.M4A

Note that the extensions must be capitalized (.MP3 versus .mp3).

Thanks!

In the options for your 605 under Files & Paths set the Playlist Format to "M3U (full paths without drive letter)".

If you have problems with transferred tracks not playing or not showing up in the Artist or Album listings, run the Repair System tool on the 605 under Settings > System > Repair & Format Tools.

I don't have my 605 with me at the moment - a couple of problems I see though.  I think the format of the playlist.m3u file as to be exact including directory separators and capitalized extension (.M3P).  Do you think the repair tool on the 605 will perform these changes?  I was considering writing a little plug-in to do this playlist format conversion.

thoughts?

I tested this on a 504 and it worked flawlessly as stated.

Sorry for taking a while to get back to you... tried this on the 605 with no luck.  I'm pretty sure they changed the format of the playlists between the 504 and the 605.  I will try and verify this on the Archos forums.

just confirming my post above... yes, the 504 and 605 handle playlists differently.  The change in the 605 playlist format (noted a few posts back) has been a topic of much discussion on the Archos forums.  Is there any chance of converting to the required format during the synching operation to the 605?

thanks!

ok - now eating crow from above posts  ::) - apparently I didn't read your post carefully enough the first time.  I had the 605 set to media mode instead of hard drive mode.  I switched over to hd mode, followed your instructions and it works perfectly!

Thanks so much - man I love MC!!!!!
