Theater View Problems with ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO

I have just installed an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO video card and am now having problems with Theater View. The buttons are not displaying correctly. When I first go to Theater View, the incorrect text is shown on the buttons (it's different everytime, but for example may display 'Playlist' on every button). When I roll over the button with the mouse, the text updates, usually to the correct value, but then repaints to some other text after the mouse moves away.

Any suggestions to correct this problem will be appreciated.

did you get the newest drivers from the ati site. i just downloaded them to get succesfully rid of some dvd playback problems.

I installed the version that came with the card (8.410.0.0, 8/13/2007). When I tried to install the latest version from ATi this morning, it repeatedly came back with an error that it couldn't find the right hardware for the update...so I am still using the 8.41 version.

That version number doesn't make sense.  What version of ATI Catalyst do you have?  They number their versions like this:

single-digit-year.month

So, the driver called 7.11 (the current one) was released in 2007 in November.  The one called 6.12 was released in 2006 in December.

The current Catalyst should CERTAINLY install for your card.  If it doesn't something else is going on.  Make sure when you download it, you get it from the right place.  Go here:

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Then select your operating system from the fancy selector thing.  Then Radeon, then Radeon HD 2600 series.  Then click the Green GO button.  That should take you to the proper download location, which should be Catalyst 7.11.  I'd download and install the full Catalyst Control Panel install.

You may need to uninstall your current driver first.  Reboot, install the Microsoft Standard VGA driver, reboot again, and THEN install the ATI Catalyst driver.

Your issue certainly sounds like a driver-related issue.  If you installed the one that came on the disc, it was probably a pretty early release driver, and they often have bugs.

Sorry about the version #. I listed the adapter driver version as reported by Device Manager. I am running ATI Catalyst version 2007.0815.2142.36937.

This morning, I downloaded the full Catalyst Software Suite 7.11 (file: 7-11_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_54435.exe) in the same way as you have described. That install failed (couldn't find the correct hardware), so I downloaded just the Display Driver (7-11_xp32_dd_54435.exe)...during the install I got the same error. I then tried to do a driver update through the Device Manager and pointed to the directory where the download extracted, and got the same error. Weird, huh? (By the way, I am running XP Pro SP2)

I could be fighting more than one problem here. I'll work through the driver update with ATI (I'll post an update if I make any headway). On the MC12 side, assuming this is not a video card driver version issue, do you have any other ideas on what the solution might be?

I've seen this exact error installing ATI drivers before.  I had two problems on the system, which when solved allowed the driver to install.  Not sure which it was that solved it, but...

(1) Clean up any spyware on the system.  I really think this was it.  Run Spybot Search & Destroy and remove anything it finds.  Reboot.

(2) Remove the previous ATI drivers via Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.  Also, go to the Hardware Manager and delete the display adapter.

(3) Reboot.  Windows will ask to install the regular VGA Driver (non-ATI).  Don't search Windows Update.  Just let it install the driver.  Reboot.

(4) Install Catalyst.

You shouldn't need to do this again for future driver updates.  I think it is because of either (a) the spyware or (b) the bunk Microsoft-provided ATI driver.

Updated (but not resolved):

(1) Downloaded current version and updates of Spybot and ran full system check. Only found cookies, deleted all but from known regular sources.

(2) Uninstalled all ATI products through Add/Remove Programs Control Panel and deleted display adapter.

(3) Rebooted and cancelled video driver installation. I did not reboot again, just installed Catalyst 7.11.

(4) Got same error: "Severe: Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit. OK"

(5) Tried steps 2 and 3 using the previous version of Catalyst 7.10. Got same error.

(6) Entered a Support Ticket on ATI's web site.

(7) Went to VisionTek's web site (manufacture of the Radeon HD 2600 PRO video card I am trying to install), and downloaded the version of Catalyst supplied on their web site. This version (2007.1016.2138.36845) installed OK.

(8) Ran MC12, changed to Theater View and......same problem, buttons not painting correctly (bummer).

(9) ? Now what ? I am out of ideas.

There must be something odd about that particular VisionTek card, which is annoying.

Either way... I too am out of ideas.  That is really quite odd.  It really sounds like a texturing problem in the driver.  Perhaps not, but I'm not seeing anything similar on any of my ATI cards (and I have a bunch, though not a 2600).

but I'm not seeing anything similar on any of my ATI cards (and I have a bunch, though not a 2600).

Ok, glynor. Thanks again for all your suggestions!

If I end up returning this card (it had 512mb, it cost me $100 at BB, marked down from $200), what card(s) would you recommend in this price range? For this computer, I am looking for an AGP, 256mb DDRn minimum, dual monitor, good, solid workhorse. I know it depends on what I want to do with it, but running MC as a media server for music and eventually video is the main driver (I don't play high-demand video games on the PC).

Update (resolved driver installation, but not Theater View problem):

AMD (ATI) Customer Care replied to the support ticket with several suggestions for solving the driver installation problem. The one that worked for me (http://ati.amd.com/online/customercare/solutions/improperinstall.html) involved manually selecting the exact INF file through Windows Update Driver in Device Manager, bypassing the ATI installer. I saw why I got the error after going through the list of drivers and not finding one for this card made by VisionTek. I selected the ATI version for this card instead. So, I now have the most current ATI display drivers installed, but this had no affect on the Theater View problem.

Have you tried lowering the framerate setting under the Theater View advanced options? Are you using XP or Vista?

Try lowering the level of Windows video hardware acceleration or disabling write combing too. This can sometimes cause display corruption etc. In XP, it's under the "troubleshooting" tab in the display options page.

Also, try a different Theater View skin just in case...

Hi raym, I am using XP Pro SP2. Before I posted, I tried everything you suggested, except disabling write combing...just tried that with no affect.

Hi newsposter, both .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 are installed on my machine. I think the Catalyst Control Center uses .NET.

I was poking around the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Confirmed I have DirectX 9.0c. I ran the Direct3D Test, and saw something interesting:

Hardware-accelerated Direct3D 7 interfaces: Saw DirectX logo on spinning cube. Looked normal.
Hardware-accelerated Direct3D 8 interfaces: Saw DirectX logo on spinning cube, but a compressed image of 2 logos was at the top of the logo.
Hardware-accelerated Direct3D 9 interfaces: Saw DirectX logo on spinning cube, but a compressed image of 2 logos was at the top of the logo.

I thought this was interesting because in Theater View, I am seeing a compressed image of multiple time displays at the top of the screen. Seems related and makes me draw the conclusion that my problem is not MC12 specific, but some type of problem with Direct3D.

? Now What ?

HIS & VisionTek make you use their driver sets for now; even a manual install won't work.

.Net is required for the CCC (Catalyst Control Center) & not specifically the driver.

I have XP Sp2 looking okay with 7.10s on an AGP 2600xt HIS, but  getting lockups on Vista x86....some weirdness with ffdshow and CCCP.....my test mkv looks all aliased at the intro so I installed the VistaCodecs FFDSHOW and it fixed it. But I had to to another fresh install of Vista x86 and I can't fix the same problem...I'm stuck with aliased mkv playback.....

Check out the AVS froums, there is a 2600 series owners thread.

So you were able to install 7.11? I'lll have to check out that link you posted above.

Hi Doctor,

Yes, I was able to manually install 7.11. It had other VisionTek cards listed in the driver installation, but it did not list the 2600 VisionTek card specifically, so I selected the ATI card in the driver list. Everything worked the same as when I had installed the driver supplied by VisionTek, i.e. the same problems existed with Theater View.

Well, after spending so much time trying to make this card work, my wife was ready to kill me since I seemed to have forgot I had two children that needed their dad's attention...so I ran down to CC, bought the PNY Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS with 512MB DDR2 for $80, yanked out the VisionTek drivers and card, installed the Nvidia, and...everything is working great! The 7600 GS is not an HD card, but that was only for future use on my computer. I just got back from returning the VisionTek to BB for a full refund.

I am happy, my wife is happy, my kids are happy, and my MC12 is happy. We are all happy!

Interestingly, ATI promoted Earthsim with their card, which I installed...it is pretty cool...but with the ATI card there were a lot of artifacts in the earth images...yet Earthsim looks great with no image problems using the Nvidia card.

I appreciate everyone's help, but am glad it is over. Now I am off to play with my kids.

I think my wife already took out a hit on me.....I own a 7600GS (any interested?) as well, but I wanted to stretch the lifespan of this 754 board.

I did find some good & specific .ini edit directions allow manual installation with new Catalyst drivers.

I haven't tried that yet but last night I was able to get a 1080P MKV (avc1?) accelerated on Windows XP SP3 with DXVA...needless to say I was pretty pumped given that the Vista install with this card and Nforce3 would lock up my system.....

Maybe down the road you can go this route again when the last of the ATI (R650?) AGP cards has been out a while....

They're releasing the RV670 (the HD 3850 and 3870) in AGP form.  There will likely be at least two AGP SKUs released, and possibly later on a third.  Hopefully this month (supposedly): HD 3850 256MB AGP and HD 3850 512MB AGP.  I'm seriously considering grabbing one of the 512MB versions for my Nforce3 socket 939 board.  Since it isn't Vista friendly though, I don't know if I want to dump any more money into it, and perhaps I should invest in a Core2 board for the HTPC...
