Syncing over library server
« on: December 25, 2007, 10:20:23 am »

I'm syncing my laptop over library server and am seeing that MC downloads the full FLAC.  Why not use the server to convert to MP3 since that's how I have it configured and then download the small mp3?  Plus my laptop wouldn't have so much processing to do.  Seems like a nice improvement.

Huh? Conversion is done on the server. I'm not 100% positive for library sync, but almost. I am 100% positive for library server, and that's the basis of library sync.

Right, I'm talking about library server sync.  I know that streaming audio over library server is converted on the server.

We're pretty sure conversion is happening on the server: how do you know that it is happening on the client?

it immediately shows downloading on three songs with no wait while they would be converted. I just calculated about 21 minutes to download 75MB over my upload speed and that's about what it was looking like.  Mp3s would be 15MB and 4 minutes.  They were not close to finished after a few minutes.

What does the server status page show?

The server shows a request for the flac file.  I have always convert turned on and am syncing to the local data space on my EEE.

Well, I just synced about 10 songs to my flash drive and the order was download, convert, then upload to flash drive.  So it really appears that it is downloading the full FLAC files first.

So you didn't use the Library Sync feature at all. (File > Library > Library Sync...)

Seems like the server conversion is not activated when Handhelds are synced.

Alex is correct.

By design, server conversion is not used in the handheld engine.

Library Sync does use server conversion.

Okay.  Could server conversion be used?  It seems like a logical choice to save internet transfers.  It's so convenient to sync a flash drive while library sync is a bit more involved.  I haven't even used it yet.  Quick summary?
