playlist on nokia 6300 in MC12
« on: January 08, 2008, 03:49:24 am »

Hello,

Just purchased MC 12 and looks good, also syncs with my nokia 6300 mobile.
The only think I can't get done is how to deal with the playlists from MC.  Nokia 6300 works
with symbian S40 OS and does not recognise m3U file.

Anyone has experience with nokia phones in MC12?

If you'll help us out a little, we can probably get it working.  Rick (Swellguy) is the one from JRiver who can make the changes.

I'd be happy to help too. Have a 6267 (S40 5th Ed). http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/platforms/s40/#5th

We need a description of how files are organized.  For example:

\music
\photos
\video

And an idea of how the playlists work.  Can you read them with notepad?  Can you post the contents?

If you take a look at the pdt.xml file in C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 12\Data\Default Resources, you'll see what we use.  Take a look at the RAZR as an example.

If it acts as a camera, we may also be able to get image acquisition working.

Thanks.

Hi!
This is what I found out:
The folder root is your phone name (in my case Nokia 6267)
Then there are 2 "root" folders
Your memory card (one can rename it to whatever, max 11 chars).
I've seen that the phone seems to treat the memory card as drive E:
The other "root" folder is phone memory ( drive C:)
All the default folders in C:-drive (phone memory) seems to change depending on your language settings.
Default folders in phone memory are:

\Gallery
    \Graphics
    \Images
    \Music files
    \Received files
    \Recordings
    \Themes
    \Tones
    \Video clips

As said these folders change name if you change your language

On the memory card the phones software seems to create these folders (english as language)

\Music
\Video clips
\Images

... and it leaves these folders ( ie does not delete/rename) when you change the language to something else. And creates new folders with same functionality depending on your language setting

Reg. playlists. The bad thing is that the phone saves created playlists somewhere internally.
Only way to access them is via the phones own player.

BR John

EDIT: The good thing is that MC (.410) sees the phone as a device... Haven't tested transfer speeds (with mini-usb cable) yet.

It seems like getting a playlist on my nokia 6300 with MC12 is not a easy thing.
Some where on the internet I fond a message that said that s40 works with a playlist
stored in a hidden file. Maybe this is a way to the solution.

Hopefully somebody knows how to help me (and others)

We're going to have to get our hands on one of these phones to improve our support of them. We have access to a Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, that looks like it has the same OS, that might help us with the 6300 & 6267. It's going to take us a few more days of digging....

I've been digging too...

1. Couldn't find the generated playlists in the phones memory. They must be buried deep... Tried with a program called MobyExplorer (I think). Anyway the folders actual names has "predef" before the folder name in the phones memory... Like /predefmusic, /predefimages and so on.

2. When You connect the phone to the computer with the cable (miniusb) you have to select the connection type from the phone. I can't tell what they are called in english but you can select (from the top): Nokia-mode (for Outlook  sync etc). A mode that sets your phone as a MTP-device and finally the mode that shows your phones memory card as a removable disk...

Well, I brought in my wife's 5300 today with the intention of getting to the bottom of this but after 15 minutes of use, wouldn't you know it - the battery was dead! How did I not see that coming?

In the short time I was working with it it looked like the playlist I tranferred worked.  I was connected via the Sync mode (MTP) and I updated the library on the phone after the sync was done and everything worked.

So it looks like the 5300 may not be able to provide any clues to help solve the problems you're having with the 6267 and 6300.

On a side note, the 5300 had the fastest transfer speed I've ever seen for an MTP device.

Haven't transferred anything in the MTP mode yet... Anyway, my problem (and apparently guusd's) is that the phones internal media software cannot handle external playlists. I have no problem what so ever to sync a playlist from MC to the phone, what I want is the phone´s software to be able to read the newly exported playlist (which MC created). As it is now, achieving this may be impossible. I have no clue where (and in which format) the phone stores and reads the playlists generated with the phone's own media software...

Perhaps we have to rely on 3rd party software for playing the media (with external playlists). I found one called KD player which seems promising however you have to shut down the player to answer a call...

Hello John,

Thanks for your input. For the short term you gave the solution.  Unltill someone has found a way how s40 musicplayer playlist handles we'll have to find a workaround with kd player.  I will give it a try this evening and will let you know if this works.

I like this phone (nokia 6300) so much, I boought one for my girlfriend as well. Now she wants to listen to music as well. As I know this mobile is very populair in Holland, some  of them will be happy to know how to deal with playlist.

I'll' be back

My apologies for reopening a thread this old.
But since there ain't any other threads about this issue (or phone) I feel I must.

....As I know this mobile is very populair in Holland, some  of them will be happy to know how to deal with playlist.....

I was just hoping if anyone figured out how to find and edit the hidden playlist in the phones memory. :-\
Cause I'm not in the mood to open the nokia software just to update my music lists.
I've been looking all over the web, but only found out that nokia hides the playlist in a non-accessible place.

btw. I'm Dutch, so guusd is right.  ;)
