Sync issues, wrong files deleted, was 'no files deleted anymore'
« on: February 08, 2008, 09:21:31 am »

Have the syncing changed recently? Now, when I sync my SE W880, the files deleted from the used playlists are still present on the phone after a sync. And I haven't dared using the "Delete from handheld any files not in sync list". How does the "Delete from handheld any files not in sync list" work anyways? Is it deleting folders as well? Files created on the phone like photos and midi files etc.?

Thanks!

How were the files deleted? In MC? If so, that alone will not remove them from the phone. They will only be removed from the phone automatically if they are deleted from a playlist you have "synced" to the phone, you have the "Delete from handheld..." option selected and you re-sync.

This is safe to do for Smartphones because we avoid any system folders and we only remove files of the same media type as the files that were removed from the synced playlist. So if you remove an audio file from a playlist only audio files will be removed from the device (images and videos will not be touched). Also, the only files we would remove are the ones that we list when you view the device. So if there are any files listed that make you nervous, you may prefer to delete files manually.

It did work, almost as expected to check the "delete from handheld...", thanks for explaining!

But it's not all straight forward...I set the Audio Path to a sub-directory of the 'Music' folder, but MC still insists on deleting files from the Music/ringtones folder :( So now I have no way of using mp3's as ringtones.

Shouldn't MC use the paths as which folders to sync?

It will delete from subfolders of Music because audio files are often located in subfolders of the Music folder like - Music\[Artist]\[Album].

I agree that Music is the default folder of most phones...but if one use the organizational part of ones brain and have this structure:

Music
Music\MC
Music\the other folders that are standard on a phone

and in MC set the audio folder to Music\MC, wouldn't it be logical that MC sync that specified folder for music files, not the root?
Or another idea..to be able to exclude folders of choice?

As you might notice, I'm VERY keen of having this one solved, sorry for that :)

I believe that's what it will do.  Did you try it?

Oooh yes I tried it :)

In sync options, I set Audio folder to Music\MC\.
When I sync, MC deletes all mp3s in Music\ringtones\ and in Music\ since those aren't imported into MC.

Nopes, .430. But I'll install the latest tonight, are there any changes in the sync department?

Just tried syncing. The files not in the specified folder are still deleted :( This isn't good is it? Can we please call it a bug?

Thanks,

The problem is if you set the music path to "Music\[Artist]\[Album]" and sync and then later set the music path to "Music\MC\[Artist]\[Album]" and sync it won't delete files not in sync as you might expect it to. Likewise if you transfer some files using another program that get stored in "Music\[Artist]\[Album]" and then you sync with MC with the above mentioned sync rules the files transfered by the other program will not get cleared as expected.

If the 'ringtones' folder can't be relocated I would say you have a clear case for not using 'Delete files not in sync".
