Very Slow Tag Updating
« on: August 06, 2002, 09:25:39 pm »

Not sure what's going on but I was wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this.  At times I can update tags on a number of songs (say a CD's worth) with no problem.  Takes seconds to update all the tags.  Then, for some reason, I'll hit a glitch and MJ will start saving the tags VERY slowly.  It will take 2-3 minutes just to update 10 songs--sometimes resulting in a crash of MJ.

I'm not doing a lot of tagging on these either, just Artist, Album, Track, Title.

Had the following error in my Event Viewer:

"Hanging application Media Jukebox.exe, version 8.0.343.0, hang module in_mp3.dll, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00007d6d."

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Running winXP, Dell GX1, 500mhz P3, w/384 megs.  MJ ver 8.0.343

Thanks,

Adam

I have noticed a correlation between untagged (or maybe not rightly tagged) files and the slowdown: If MP3s have v1-tags and I set up MJ to update v2-tags _or_ the v2-tag-padding(?) (the space in the file for more information) is not sufficient.

If the update is done, the next update is _very_ fast and no slowdowns at all.

I've also experienced that: Sometimes it can take MJ minutes or longer just to tag a handful of files. Even when I just change the track numbers.

maybe you guys don't know this but.

ID3v1.1 tags do not require a full re-write of the mp3, since the tag is located in the last 128 bytes of the mp3.

when ever you change a id3v2 tag the program must re-write the whole file from front to back so that the id3v2 tag can be saved to the mp3 on the front side of the mp3.

thats why you will have a longer tag write time.

I hardly ever use id3v2 tags because of this reason.

I have experienced this too, and believe it is an MJ issue and not an ID3 issue.

All of my mp3s have only ID3v2 tags, no ID3v1, but they are all correct (or at least how I want them), so I haven't updated them in a while.

However, of late I have been adding album art to my albums.  I do not save the art in the tag, I link it to an external file.  3 times out of 4, this is a very quick process, less than a second.  Then the 4th time, doing this will take upwards of 4-5 minutes to simply link 10 mp3s to an external file.

Possibly MJ has issues knowing when to rewrite the ID3v2 tag and when it does not need to?

WinXP, P4 1.6A, 512 megs, MJ 8.0.336 (gonna upgrade tonight, been busy)

An ID3v2 bug was fixed in build 8.0.343.  Please try it.

The ID3v2 library is maintained by other people, so we don't have total control over what happens.

In this case, the bug was a combination of their problem and ours.

JimH:

The problem occurs in version 8.0.343 as well.  Also, I may be off-base here, but doesn't MJ license the ID3v2 library for use in the software...doesn't that make it MJ's problem...not the company that it's licensed from?

'Course if I'm wrong about that...my apologies ahead of time.

If MJ Uses The DLL "id3lib.dll" the answer Is no

This DLL Is Aval Free. It Is Programed By The Fine Gents (i ment that in a negitive way) At www.ID3.org and that makes it everyones problem that uses this dll to write id3 tags.

So you mean, that even with 8.0.343 the tagging is slow? I do not believe, that it is a problem with the ID3V2, because Musicmatch Jukebox can write the Tags very fast and without any Problems.

gdp2000

well that depends if there is room saved to the id3v2 tag and that the jukebox program or editor can understand there was some reserved space in the id3v2 tag area.

I do not know if MJ uses or reserves space for adding or modifying id3v2 tags. i do know in version 7.2 they talked about it and that mj did use reserved space. but i am not sure if that is anylonger true.

Currently we are using free code of ID3lib.  It's not perfect but it works.  We are thinking about writing our own id3 library but that will take at least a month and will be expensive.

The problem is not in the format but in the implementation.

I'm sorry but we can't fix the problem right now.

This is one of the biggest problems I have with MJ. I and many of my friends think, that it is a good or maybe the best jukebox programm, but nobody of us will buy the pro version until this is corrected.

gdp,
ID3v2 is a flawed "standard".  Perfect support for it is not possible.  If you can't work around it, I'm afraid there is nothing that can currently be done.
