Media Center 12.0.438
« on: February 15, 2008, 12:48:41 pm »

This is the latest version of MC 12.0.  Any MC12.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

This latest build (usually safe) of MC12.0 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/MC12/MediaCenter120438.exe

12.0.438 (2/15/2008)

1. Fixed: Pressing "Next" during radio playback did not work. (only applies to last few builds)

12.0.437 (2/15/2008)

1. Fixed: The new option "Use gapless for sequential album tracks" was not working properly.

12.0.436 (2/14/2008)

1. Fixed: Small thumbnails could have a discolored right border in some cases.
2. Fixed: Rename Files From Properties was mangling UNC paths.
3. Fixed: Podcasting engine could incorrectly download image files names http___*.
4. Fixed: When setting "Store image next to file", setting art for URL files would not work properly.
5. Changed: The Podcast status column shows "Keep forever" for files not in the feed but elected to be kept by the user.
6. Changed: Switching TV channels during time-shifting involving a digital channel will now get user confirmation (if the user has configured TV to have such confirmation), to avoid accidentally losing time-shifting data.
7. NEW: Added option "Playback > Use gapless for sequential album tracks". (enabled by default)
8. Changed: Scheduler changes are saved as changes are made instead of only at shutdown.
9. Changed: The panes did not support select all (Ctrl+A), select none, or selection inverse (Ctrl+Shift+A).
10. NEW: Added undo and redo to the search control and new Rename From Info expression control.
11. Changed: The "Confirm Stop Time-shifting" message box (as well as the new "Confirm Switching Channel" message box) in TV has more sensible Default button and Cancel button.
12. NEW: Menu for adding an expression function in Rename Files From Properties shows a tooltip explaining the function.
13. NEW: Added expression explanation function tooltip for all expressions. (only applies to Rename Files From Properties for now)
14. Fixed: When building a filename from rules, if the base path evaluates to a non-local filename, the base path rule will be replaced with the existing file path.
15. Fixed: Time-shifting data files were not completely deleted when switching between digital TV channels even though the user chose to delete them.

12.0.435 (2/13/2008)

1. Fixed: Search editor in view scheme dialog was not modal.
2. Fixed: Rename From Info dialog would save presets as you typed instead of when pressing OK, making the drop list of presets messy.
3. Fixed: JPEG color space conversion coloring could be off (only applies to last few builds).
4. Fixed: JPEG decoder could output a bad chunk in the lower right corner of an image (only applies to last few builds).
5. NEW: Very simple (at this point) file stack feature enabled.
6. Changed: Update the expression controls in Rename Files From Properties to a newer style (still a work in progress) (notice function tooltips for things like IsEqual(...), If(...))

12.0.434 (2/12/2008)

1. NEW: Expressions are supported in the base path of the "Rename Files From Properties" dialog.
2. NEW: Added "Copy to new location and update database to point to new location" option to the "Rename Files From Properties" dialog.
3. NEW: Using "1" as the parameter for MCC_EXPORT_ALL_PLAYLISTS will cause the finished message box to be suppressed.
4. Fixed: WMDM devices could cause Media Center to crash.
5. Fixed: The setting for whether to use WMDM or not for a drive-style device was not being honored.
6. Fixed: Locales where the month abbrieviations are numbers (such as Japan) would not parse dates.
7. Fixed: In some cases large amounts of removed files were not getting purged from the database.
8. Fixed: Tracks getting duplicated in playlist on iPods.
9. Changed: Updated French (Canadian) language file (thanks Guillaume).
10. Fixed: MC deleting play stats file every time an iPod is connected.
11. Fixed: Certain dimension JPEG images could have an artifact in the lower right corner. (only applies to 429 and later).

1. Changed: Some tweaks in Hauppauge 1600 TV card support.
2. Fixed: Some JPEG files would fail to load. (only affects 429 and later)
3. Fixed: TrackInfo was displaying a blank page at times.
4. Fixed: Slowdowns in some core functions reduced.

1. Fixed: Pressing "Next" during radio playback did not work. (only applies to last few builds)

The "next" option in the "Player" Menu is still greyed when playing radio.

As a consequence, the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+N doesn't work

Guillaume

I'm not seeing this.

Anyone else?

It happens if you have Continuous off.  For now, just turn on Continuous playback.

[Carbo said in a post moved:]
On a complete different subject, I noticed a strange behavior on the recent builds.
In a detail list view, select several files (10 for example). Now click on one of the files (the fifth).
With the noire skin the selected file is blue but you can notice than the first file is still highlighted in light grey.
Now try to select the remaining file  (5 to 10). The result is that it selects the whole 10 files again as it was remembering it was the previous selection.
Is it a desired behavior ?

Not sure if this problem was introduced in 438, or if it has been around for a while...

Say you have playlist Music located in playlist group iPod:
   iPod
      Music
          music tracks

If you select Music and delete a track it works as expected. However, if you select iPod and delete a track you get dialog to remove track from library. I think delete track should behave the same for both cases.

Library sever bug; Client does not honor a server scheme using Disk Location as a view.
Server View Scheme details:
Step 1: Create View Items
Preset: Custom
Location (E:\Music\All Rock)
Album
Name
Step 2: Name Scheme
No check in auto name
Name = All Rock
Step 3: Modify Properties
Image: Audio
Tree position: Automatic
check mark on Populate tree, Honor parent scheme search strings and Show in Theater View
Step 4: Pick files,
[Genre]=[Country] ~sort=[Album Artist (auto)],[Album],[Disc #],[track #],[Name]
Display on server is fine, display on Tivo is fine.
Client will show the correct name of the scheme but expanding shows only an unassigned entry, expanding the unassigned shows the complete database with every song and artist listed in alphabetical order.

No, it won't, and I don't think it should. "E:" only makes sense on the server machine, not on the client machine.
Instead, the client machine locations should start with "http://192.168.x.x/...

If you have a different idea, please start a different thread.

Something is wonky with the standard Windows Shift select range of items in table. It sort of works but is very fussy.

DVD import has strange behavior. Navigate to unimported dvd folder in drives and devices and you see 2 ifo's when you should only see one. Press F5 and it cleans up to the expected 1 ifo. This is repeatable.

I experienced the same thing yesterday - no matter where I shift selected, all items in the list would get selected.  It is pretty easy to reproduce in my Now Playing tab.

Out of all my 2626 jpgs I have three, similar in dimension ratios, that won't display thumbs or open in MC; they display in Explorer & Irfanview just fine.

The dimensions are:

1. 1558x2447
2.750x1102
3. 986x1496

I can't CAN reproduce this on two laptops running Vista. All I have to do on this machine is make thumbs super small and MC crashes. The only thing I can think of is I'm running 1920x1080. Would crashes in Audio view scheme still involve Direct show? I can playback all video files okay with MC.The slider gets "sticky" for me when I make thumbs really small, it's not smooth. I was able to avoid the crashes by stepping down with the scroll wheel, but I later caused I crash with the slider as I made thumbs larger.

Tabs are causing a crash here, pretty sure this is it. As soon as I close all tabs (I usually use max #) I don't get the crash. As soon as I add one tab I get the crash again.

I think I have narrowed it down - it's caused by a new tab that is the same as the current tab. Can someone try to reproduce this...
FYI - Also tried with DataMaster disabled.

EDIT - I was able to reproduce this on 2 other machines. Has to be the same view scheme, on Albums or Name (lots of tiles basically), or sub-scheme which contains some but not all of the items in parent.

I cannot reproduce this. I'm pretty sure that fixing the blank screen did not re-introduce the older bug. Something else is going on. Please provide me with any additional details you can think of.

Dragging a folder from Windows Explorer into the tree and choosing Move results in files being moved into that folder and MC prompts to delet the empty folder. Shouldn't it just drag in as a sub-folder?

Viewing pictures in Display view, if I go from a portrait picture to a landscape, I get a thin border at the bottom of the landscape left over from the portrait.

Only seems to happen with pictures from my SLR (dimensions 3888x2592) not with my other camera (2272x1704).

5. NEW: Very simple (at this point) file stack feature enabled.
Not sure of the exact use here, but it looks promising. I'll read up on the other Stack thread.
I do have ALOT of crashes with this function though. Playing around in playing now with some mp3's in thumbnail mode. Stacking and then skipping to next track seems to crash MC more times than not. Sometimes even a lasso (right click) movement makes MC crash. Crashing when reaching end of last stack. Crashing even when double clicking a stack to play. Have also crashed when trying to stack in detail mode. There's to much to pinpoint a reason here.

12. Changed: Pressing down on the last row of thumbnails in Theater View works more like a standard list.
Thanks. This will prevent skipping alot of tv shows and music etc. ONE problem though.
If there are a thumbnail directly beneat, you will expect it to go directly down to that one. And it does..
When there is no thumbnails directly beneath you would expect it to go to the the thumbnail furthest to the right. It does the oposit.
It's not logical the way it is now.

Are there 5 to 10 steps you can detail that will create a crash?

Handheld sync to virtual folder on wireless laptop is returning errors which complete okay if sync is re-run. LOTS of errors.

All image conversions, and running 4 conversions at once.

The new features in Rename Files from Properties are very nice, thank you.

I did some serious work with it tonight and observed a couple problems.

The dialogue does not remember the last used pattern. Recently used patterns can be found in the lists however the last one used is not automatically retained.

I observed a lock up. I set up a pattern to rename and move a group of files. While I was inspecting the proposed new names (before pressing go) the dialogue vanished and MC locked up.

[edit] I was simultaneously analyzing a different group of files when the lockup occured.

[edit2] Definately repeatable. I tried again with no simultaneous analysis and MC still crashed while I was hovering over the new proposed names.

[edit3] Successfully renamed my files without causing a crash by avoiding hovering over the proposed new names.

I was able to reproduce some of it. It goes something like this:

1. Add playlist of tracks
2. Lasso track/thumbnail from the middle of playing now
3. Stack
4. Hit Play - Crash

I did this for about 3 times before everything went wrong. Every time I hit play on any of the files from Playing Now, MC shut down. With or without a Close message. It's as my music have gotten some corrupt tags or something. Even the files that I never stacked seems to be hopless to play now.

Even playing a track from a totally different playlist, never stacked, crashed in the middle of the song. I did nothing for a long time. Something fishy with this whole build, or with the stack function. At least on my computer.
After a long music pause and a restart everything seems to play fine now though.

I'll try it some more on a different computer later on.

I've still got a bunch of jpg's that do not display. Let me know if you want me to email you one.
I'm very pleased you noticed and fixed this. Thanks.

1. I have three, and posted dimensions in this thread above.

2. If someone could set me straight on whether it sounds like a bug or not:

I have some widescreen ratios that I'm having trouble converting with the handheld sync.

In Windows Explorer, the vertical ratio shots are shown laying on their side with reported dimensions of 2816x1584.

MC correctly props them up vertically as taken by the camera, and reports them as 1584x2816.

When I convert, I tried to use a 590x1050 ratio for just these files and the results were very small images. I think MC applied the 590px to the 2816px.

When I tried to use 1680x1050, it's again backwards. Now my images are too tall: 954 x1680.

I pretty new to all this so please tell me if I'm making a mistake.

3. Handheld sync tries to upconvert image sizes on transfer. Since we currently can not use library sync, I'm stuck using the the sync to a virtual handheld. Shouldn't the default behavior be to resize down to the target dimensions? Ignore smaller dimensions (avoid upsampling a 96kbs mp3 to 256) seems logical when dealing with lossy formats.

I cannot reproduce this. I'm pretty sure that fixing the blank screen did not re-introduce the older bug. Something else is going on. Please provide me with any additional details you can think of.

Sorry for my delayed answer.
My MC12 configuration:
- Option Startup Location: Last Location
- Split view with 4 tabs
- Second tab points to MC PlayingNow with TrackInfo PM Lyrics 15
- Use of Rhino Banga's PlayingNow plugin (if that matters)

The issue occurs:
- Start MC12
- Click on PlayingNow tab (contains about 100 playable tracks)
- Left click on a track to select (maybe not necessary)
- Click Play button
- Track starts playing

but:
- The TrackInfo shows the info of a wrong artist, album, name, coverart for about 1 second
(it's always the same artist, album, name, ... as already discussed in another thread a couple of weeks ago)
- then the correct info follows

This issue occurs only the first time after a restart of MC12.
My PC is quite slow, maybe this helps to see the problem. On a fast machine the correct info could replace the wrong info fast enough.

U.

This has been fixed in a later build (443 or higher).

The problems I've mentioned in previous builds, I'm still having, except the Track Info display is working fine now.  I've noticed something new, however.  I noticed that you changed how you adjust the upload volume adjustment, moving it from the handheld right click context menu to the handheld options screen.  The problem is that every time I install a new build, the installer program overwrites my setting by unchecking the box for volume adjustment and reverting my 25% setting to 0.  Maybe you can move handheld settings to the registry or a part of some configuration file that doesn't get overwritten by a new install?

EDIT: This problem is much worse than I thought.  It's not just during installs of new builds but it seems to reset every time I close MC and I have to check handheld options every time I want to upload new or modified files.

Minor bug:

If Lyrics are shown in AW, the vertical (up-down) scrollbar is allways shown (I think this may be expected), but it sometimes disappears for a second when the cursor hovers the scroll bar.

Every time I run an Import, after MC scans my drives and does it's "Searching for Files"  it goes to "Analyze Library" where for some reason it always analyzes 12,636 files.
The odd thing is that this number is rather consistant and relates to nothing about my library i.e.: library size, recent imports, changed files, nothing I can place.

What could this indicate?

This build (.438) is hanging all the time...
Almost every third/fourth time i open MC it stops responding whilst loading or atleast usually within 1-2min.
I have to force to close it with the taskmanager and then open it again.
I've updated my antivirus to the latest build (Kaspersky v7.0.1.325), other than that i haven't changed any hard/software config > is there a compatibility problem with MC and kaspersky or is it just me?
hope to get this sorted out, thanks for an otherwise great build :)

Uninstall Kapersky (to test).  We've seen a problem like this in the past with it.

In general, I don't believe virus checkers should be set to check every file every time it's opened.

In the current version, the scroll wheel on my Microsoft mouse works only sporadically.  I have no problems using the mouse with any other applications or on web pages.

This bug does still exist (I commented in the v12.0.428 thread a reinstalled fixed everything) and was first observed/mentioned for release 12.0.422 (this does not happen with 12.0.410).

The scenario:

This started somewhere around 12.0.410 and exists in .438....

1) Use a different application to rip CDs to .FLAC
2) Extract the embedded jpg cover art into the directory (/artist/album/album_cover_art.jpg)
3) Start JRiver
4) Import the FLAC songs
5) Select the songs and remove the cover art
6) Reselect the songs and perform a "Quick find cover art"

Everything looks good....

Double click one of the songs to play and the cover is displayed on the left "display" but the mini-icon disappears (replaced with music symbol) for the playing song and one song before and after.  As I click through the songs the mini-icons continue to disappear and if I reselect a song to play a 2nd time the cover art is empty in the left "display."

Finally, this only affects songs imported with v12.0.428 & .438, all previous FLAC songs in the library are unaffected and the cover art is displayed properly.

Please let me know if you need more information.

   Thanks!

   - Jeff

[UPDATE]

I noticed as I walked through my MC12 settings that the reinstall had re-enabled the "store image in image tag" setting.  I have unchecked that checkbox and everything appears to be working properly (for me) again.  But, this would suggest that MC12 is having a problem adding the jpg file to the FLAC music files.  This is not the desired behavior for me so I will be dropping this issue as I need the album cover are to be external and the path stored in the image tag.

  Thanks

Minor problem with Rename Files From Properties...

Assume you have a directory whose name is prefixed with a period, eg. ".Books"

Then Rename Files from Properties selecting the directory .Books

Files are moved to a directory wiithout the period, eg. "Books"
