M4V File Type Not Available in DirectShow Playback Options
« on: February 18, 2008, 02:50:37 pm »

The topic says it all... But, to be clear, currently MC allows you to set DirectShow playback options for MP4, M4A, and even MOV file types, but not M4V.  It forces you to use Quicktime to play back M4V files.  This is silly.  M4V files are simply MP4 files with a different extension!  If you have DirectShow filters installed that can handle MP4, then you can automatically handle M4V.  There is no difference other than that Apple wanted to distinguish between Audio-only MP4 and Video MP4 files, so made up some new extensions (which are widely used for Podcasts).

Can we please either get M4V added to the list of file types in the DirectShow Playback Options dialog, or (preferably) just have M4V files follow whatever is set for MP4 in that dialog?  Thanks!!

hmm...

Perhaps this is why I needed to install QuickTime7 to get M4V to play in MC.

I would like to have it separate from MP4. It would allow a different filter selection if needed. You never know what stuff Apple will add to M4V (standard conforming or not).

I have (had) a lot of m4v files. I just rename them to mp4.

Sorry, it slipped my mind. I meant to do it weeks ago.

Done now (in 442 or later builds).

Dumb question, but should I now rename the mp4 files back to m4v?

My assumption is that you only need M4V if you intend to download to iPod (but I may be wrong).

I download the mp4 files to the iPod and iPhone.  I have to use iTunes to download to the iPhone, but it will download the mp4 files.  I don't know if iTunes can play the mp4, but I don't use it to play or manage my library anyway.

It can.  Don't bother to rename them.

Thanks Yaobing!!!
