Replaygain & AAC within MC 12
« on: March 23, 2008, 11:34:13 am »

Hello,

I now buy all my songs from Apple iTunes (AAC files without DRM)...

Well, I can play the songs in MC 12 but I cannot use the Analyze tools.

No problem... I can use Foobar 2K to do this. The Replaygain info is then saved within the file.

My problem is... MC 12 does not seem to use this Replaygain info. I don't see it in the Replaygain column.

Am I missing something here ?

Thanks !

Alex

When did Apple switch to DRM free?  I missed that.

Yes.

MC does not have a decoder plugin for AAC files in MP4 container. For AAC/m4a playback MC uses either QuickTime or DirectShow decoding. The QT method is more limited. You need to configure MC to use DirectShow playback if you want to use replay gain and the other DSP features.

You can do the following:
1. Install CCCP:  http://www.cccp-project.net/
2. Enable DirectShow playback for the m4a file type in: Options > Playback > Video > DirectShow playback settings..." (it is under "video" because most of the settings are video related).

After the files can be played through DirectShow you can use MC's analyzer. MC cannot import the replay gain information that was tagged by foobar.

I think he means files that were ripped or otherwise encoded with the iTunes program, not files that were bought from the iTunes store.

I see ... now, but didn't when I first (hastily) read the question.

For some time now Apple has offered higher quality 256 kbps DRM free files as a premium option:

Yes, it's called iTunes plus... But right now, maybe 5% of all songs are available.

I'd use Amazon but it's not available where I live !

Thanks Alex B... I tried your solution.

Well, let me tell you. I'm computer litterate and I find this incredibly complicated. It's half working right now. I still have some issues.

Apple is the second largest music seller worldwide. It seems to me that MC 12 should be able to play those files out-of-the-box !

It's not some obscure format.
