iPod Conversion Cache
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:02:07 am »

I'm a bit confused about the iPod conversion and cache feature. I used to have to keep 2 sets of video files in my library. 1 was a full size MPEG or MP4 for good quality home viewing and the other was an iPod formatted MP4 for use with my iPod. It is now much easier to simply keep the High quality videos and allow MC to convert the videos to iPod Native format on the fly.

I thought that if I turn the cache option on and set a cache folder that once the videos were converted they would be stored in the cache folders so that any time that the iPod was initialized or when I sync my wife's or kid's iPod the conversion would not have to be processed again. I did NOT choose the option for a separate cache for each device but it doesn't seem to keep this converted file cached anywhere and the files need to be converted with each sync of a new iPod.

Am I thinking about the cache wrong? I also noticed that I can build the iPod cache ahead of time which I would imagine would perform the conversion prior to a sync. This feature appears to only process my audio files.

Hi,

The conversion cache was only wired into the audio conversion process.  That cache has been replaced with the stacks.  Where we convert the file and stack it with the original.  These stacked conversions exist in the database (although they are usually hidden) and the user can tag them or whatever.

At this time this is also only wired into the audio conversion process.

I guess that would be why I can't find the files.

Are there plans to allow the storage of the converted iPod Video files? Since MC is already doing the work it would be great if it could be done only once.

It seems like a good idea.
