Media Center 12.0.487
« on: April 25, 2008, 06:55:43 am »

This is the latest version of MC 12.0.  Any MC12.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

This latest build (usually safe) of MC12.0 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/MC12/MediaCenter120487.exe

12.0.487 (4/24/2008)

1. NEW: Added revised red eye removal tool to the image editor.
2. Fixed: Possible crash when viewing a file list.
3. Optimized: Checking for file existence in a list is done in a low priority background thread, so that unavailable network drives, etc. can not lag the program.
4. Fixed: After drawing a red file missing X on a file, the program wouldn't detect when the file was no longer missing.
5. Changed: Alexicons show special status images for file missing, playback error, and playing instead of showing the cover art.
6. Changed: Improved image editor text stamping tool.
7. Optimized: View schemes that included a grouped field (i.e. A-C, D-F, etc.) will load much faster.
8. Optimized: Album grouping (for album thumbnails lists, etc.) is faster.

12.0.486 (4/23/2008)

1. Fixed: Standard controls like edits would not work properly on certain dialogs.
2. Changed: Italian translation updated (thanks, Massimo).
3. Updated: Start page.

12.0.485 (4/23/2008)

1. Fixed: If a message box was shown before the skinning engine was loaded it could crash (like after the crash recovery).
2. Changed: When scrolling a list showing only one thumbnail, it will always select (only) the visible item, so that delete, tag, etc. work on the visible file.
3. Fixed: Recommendation engine was ignoring the enable/disable option setting in some cases.

12.0.484 (4/22/2008)

1. Fixed: Ape encoder registration could fail.
2. Changed: Enhanced Video Renderer (EVR) is used (when available) for WinTV PVR and other hardware-encoding MPEG-2 TV devices. Experimental.
3. Changed: Web home page added for media 'Suggestions' under Services & Plugins. Also some enhancements to the list view.
4. Fixed: TV time-shifting would not work for WinTV PVR 150 if JRiver Video Codec was selected for software compression on Vista.
5. NEW: After Autostack the user is asked if they would like to type in a filetype to use to select the top file.

12.0.483 (4/22/2008)

1. Changed: When a truncation tooltip is showing, it no longer blocks a regular tooltip from showing.
2. Fixed: Importing Action Window progress could truncate the "Searching: [path]" text.
3. Fixed: Multi-threaded text drawing (thumbnail lists, etc.) could have drawing artifacts.
4. Fixed: When Stack is called from the MRU list the current right click item is set.

12.0.482 (4/21/2008)

1. Fixed: Replay Gain values could get truncated to the nearest integer during analysis.
2. Fixed: Arrow up and down didn't work nicely when the thumbnail slider was locked to one image per view.
3. Fixed: Ripped file names always had ".wav" in them (e.g. SongName.wav.mp3).
4. Fixed: Get Cover Art dialog could truncate the text on the result items.
5. Fixed: Clicking "Browse..." in the Rename Files From Properties dialog wouldn't update the base path until the mouse passed over the base path.
6. Fixed: Sometimes etched divider lines on dialogs would not draw properly.
7. Fixed: Stack information added to non grouped tooltips.
8. Fixed: When adding a watch folder in Options > Library & Folders, other settings changes made on the dialog would be discarded.
9. Changed: The mode picker below My Computer views better honors skin effects.
10. Changed: Removed threading from tooltip window to fix possible hangs / crashes (to return at a later date).
11. Changed: Selection position for right click menus is now the item that was right clicked on.
12. NEW: When creating a stack via the right click menu it will use the file that was clicked as the top.  (See item 10.)
13. NEW: Pane positioning (top, left, right) is stored on a per view scheme basis.

12.0.481 (4/18/2008)

1. NEW: When moving the thumbnail slider to the biggest setting, the list enters a special mode that always keeps exactly one item visible and doesn't allow partial, messy looking scrolling.
2. Fixed: During YADB Track Info lookup, a bad server result could cause a crash.
3. Fixed: HH Conversion Cache would not save a file unless one had an insane amount of disk space left.
4. Changed: Added more logging to playback startup to help trouble-shoot playback issues.
5. Fixed: Sometimes a popup confirmation could stay on the screen while running a tool until the tool finished.
6. NEW: Image Editor remembers its last window position between uses.
7. Fixed: When enlarging thumbnails, the selected thumbnail would not be centered if the scroll was at the top position in the list.
8. Fixed: Right click stack menu commands should show up in the MRU.  (Not just search.)
9. Fixed: Set Stack Top not an option for a file that is already the stack top.
10. Changed: Stack icon column removed as default from some views.
11. NEW: An iPhone/iPod Touch can now be ejected.
11. Fixed: Disconnecting or reconnecting an iPhone/iPod Touch could crash the program. (Disconnecting during a transfer may still cause a crash.)
12. Changed: Some views allowed stack actions when it wasn't appropriate.  Right click menus and stack icon clicks are vetted at the view.
13. Changed: Some stack commands added to the mccommands list.  (Expand, collapse, etc.)
14. Fixed: Click-n-drag to select text in the search box or other custom edit control would not work properly.

The crashing problems with file lists and tooltips in 481 and 482 definitely seem to have been fixed now, thanks :)

Small bug I'm sure wasn't there before:
If the player is stopped, and I add a song to playing now, if there is a duplicate of this song in playing now, it will add the song to the bottom but play the first instance instead.
e.g., I've just finished listening to an album and decide I want to hear a favourite track again, I right click, add to playing now, it adds the song to the bottom but starts playing from where the track occurs in the album, plays the rest of the album, and finally that track again.

after adopting Alex's method of keeping and handling Cover Art with the audio files I've discovered a minor bug (I believe, unless it's by design)

On Image files the Date field reverts to a full date format (yyyy/mm/dd) rather than keeping the format used in the Audio files (yyyy)
This causes me problems when using "Fill Properties from Filename" followed by "Rename Files From Properties" because the covers wind up in a seperate folder due date being in my folder naming structure.

Perhaps you should use the Date (Year) field for those images instead.

MC is trying to display a tooltip for a podcast that has a lot of info (formatted as one long sentance).
However, by doing so the tooltip is extended over the entire screen horisontally so you can't see file info that is on the leftside of the tooltip and MC is cutting away everything that can't be fitted on the right side also. so what you see is basically pretty useless.
(is this making any sense? ;) - if necessary i'll provide a screenshot on what i'm referring to)

perhaps tooltips could be defined a bit more properly so it could cut a long sentance into several lines instead (just so that the leftmost side of the tooltip is always visible (up to a limit of couse - otherwise it would probably take up the whole display vertically instead :P))

pressing the Back arrow while in the tree, upon return to the View Scheme where I was prior, MC will occaisionally open the VS in a 'drilled-down' view rather than in the Panes view

MC hangs when trying to "update tags from library".  It works for the first dozen or so files, then stops and I have to force MC to shut down.

Note:  The files are on a network drive
Note:  Using MC 12.496

Please start a new thread and copy your system info from MC Help and paste it there.

496 isn't out yet.  Maybe you mean 486.  If so, install 487 first.

Performance seems to have taken a hit.  When I'm navigating the left hand tree looking at view schemes (all showing Details) previously the response was immediate, now there is a slight pause before the results are displayed resulting in a slightly hiccuping experience.

The paste issue into the search box is still there:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=46127.msg316349#msg316349

It could be to do with copy/paste when a 'Tab' gets copied?

In Audio pane, details view, if I click on any stack item then MC will immediately and silently close. Parent files are all flac, children files are all mp3 in my handheld cache.

If you right click the item and (drill down all the way through the stack menu) run "error check and correct stacks" on one of the stacks does it find any errors?

Another small bug: (I'll report something really worth reporting one day)

The large thumbnail seems to invert pure black if it is only displaying for one file

If you right click the item and (drill down all the way through the stack menu) run "error check and correct stacks" on one of the stacks does it find any errors?

Stack Error Report
Checking 1 files.
Found 1 top files.
(Additional files not listed could be affected.)
Checking (Ave Maria) stack.  Member string ()
Clearing bad top (Ave Maria)
Stack check complete.  1 errors found.

Okay, I guess it sees problems so now my question is why? How do I rebuild them all? The parent and children files are all still there in their original places.

Edit:
I just synched my iPod and it had no problems using the cache. I thought maybe that might realign the stacks cache but it didn't. After the successful iPod sync I again double clicked one of the stacks icon and MC crashed.

There were some changes to how stacks are stored early on that, combined with me coding like a particularly dim avocado, might be leaving things in a bad state.  Not sure why it would crash but one thing you can do is select all your files and whack them with the error check stick OR simply unstack them.  (Which might be the same thing as running the error check.)  They should then be restacked in future syncs.  (Or you could try the autostack.)

Stack Error Report
Checking 1 files.

If the player is stopped, and I add a song to playing now, if there is a duplicate of this song in playing now, it will add the song to the bottom but play the first instance instead.

Probly related to this, if I try to play something shuffled, it shuffles fine, but then jumps to Track 1.

-- Disk Location views no longer create an expandable tree. Instead all I get is the root directory being viewed. I haven't used this view in a while, so this problem may have cropped up in a prior build. I can select subdirectories from the Pane that is part of the view, but not from the tree on the left of the MC screen.

-- In the "Tag" Action Window show tags in current view does not necessarily show all and only all tags that are in the current view. For example, in one current view I have "Location" which is a custom field, but do not have "Events". Until I select and deselect Events from the "Also Show" menu, Events shows up in the tagging window. Until I select "Location from the "Also Show" menu, "Location" does not show up in the tagging window.

When ripping CD tracks with a filename rule like "[track #]. [Artist] - [Name]" the resulting file name will become "[track #]. [Artist] - [Name]. [artist] - [name]" (i.e. thelast two fields will be repeated in lower case). This seems to be caused by the dot after the track number, because when I replace or omit it the generated name will be right. Using the same rule for the renaming of files works correctly.

edit: the (Track #) field name starts with an upper case T but for some reason the forum converts it to lower case.

Are the folders UNC paths? Here's a quote from a recent forum thread:

"Quote from: CadErik
all the files are showing in "All Videos" but they are not showing in the "Disk location" under the share \\bertie."

I noticed this too. Earlier today I tried to change my usual three mapped drive letters to network shares on one of my PCs.

I replaced:
X:\  with  \\ABX\x_music\
Y:\  with  \\ABX\y_video\
Z:\  with  \\ABX\z_stuff\

MC replaced the paths correctly and the shares worked in other library views but the "Disk Location" view schemes showed only \\ABX (the server's name), not the three separate shares. When I selected the \\ABX tree branch the file list was completely empty.

I would have expected it to show the three separate shares similarly like the X:, Y: and Z: drive letters showed up before. ...

A screenshot:

MC11.1 does not have this problem (I have exactly the same test library from MC11.1 in both program versions):

Are the folders UNC paths?

...

MC11.1 does not have this problem (I have exactly the same test library from MC11.1 in both program versions):

Yes, they are. Your screenshots show exactly what I was referring to.

Crash during analyze; I don't even use podcasts but I ALWAYS find this podcast scheduler line lurking around when I get crashes:

Coming in build 490 and later:
Fixed: Possible crash while analyzing audio using the popup dialog.

In the meantime, you could use Auto-Import to do the analysis.

Hi.  I have 487 installed on a new XP laptop (Dell D630).  Am getting Windows errors every time when I Locate music file on external disk.  Windows always gives a  Data Execution Prevention error.  Media Center stays up with no problems.  Windows closes the window and gives error panel.

Can this be fixed?
Thanks.

Please say more about what you are doing.  "Locate music file" isn't clear.

Using MC to play MP3s.  Have library or playlist open in a window, select one song/track, right click, Locate>On Disk (external).  This has worked well in the past.  But I have a new laptop AND the new version of MC.  WinXP is fully up to date.

Ignore this.  Now I cannot duplicate this behavior.   Not sure what has happened differently.  Thanks.

Two things that have been bothering me:

- When doing "Cover Art/Paste from Clipboard" with an image URL, it seems that MC recompresses JPG files. I've verified that several times by saving the original image via the browser, and comparing it to the image MC has saved. MC's version has a larger filesize most of the time, and has a "Intel(R) IPP JPEG encoder [5.3.477] - Nov 18 2007" tag in the header. Please, tell me that MC doesn't recompress JPG images (which would be a pointless thing to do, and makes image quality worse). I remember a discussion a while ago where one of the devs (can't remember who it was) said that cover art added via "Paste from Clipboard" should be untouched.

- When i click inside the search field (top right of the MC window), a search term that's already in that field doesn't get marked. I remember a different behaviour in older MC versions. Current behaviour isn't very user-friendly IMO, as i first have to manually delete the old search term before entering a new one. I know that clicking on the little "x" erases the current search term, but doing that updates the view to show the whole library, which causes a delay of several seconds on my system.

MC adds a tag to the jpg.

Try single, double, and triple clicks in the search window.  A triple click should get you what you want.

Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.

Ah, double click does the trick. I'd prefer the "single click marks content"-method, but i can live with the "multiple click method".

Regarding JPG's: i did a binary compare of some images, and MC does definitely more than just adding a tag. The images that are saved by MC are different to the originals. The tool i'm using for comparing the files is "intelligent", so it would show me if the only change would be an added header. I can't 100% verify that the content of the image file has changed (need more time for that - hex editing and comparison is tedious and time-consuming), but here's what i see in an example pic:
Original file: 122.839 Bytes
MC's version: 160.487 Bytes
The "header" MC is writing seems to be just a couple of bytes long, so i wonder why the resulting file is much larger than the original (~ 36kb in the case of my test image).

It is clear that MC decodes and recompresses the jpg image when an URL is pasted from the clipboard. The resulting image file is encoded using "Intel JPEG encoder v.5.3.477" library.

Naturally it would be better if MC would just download and save the original image file.

MC does not add any metadata to external cover art images. The files need to be tagged separately like any other image files if file tags are needed.

This is a bug.  It will be fixed in build 491 and later.
