updating cover art without telling me
« on: September 10, 2008, 12:40:55 pm »

I've been using MC for years and years and years. I've liked how it just scooped up my files, played them, but didn't modify my files unless I told it to.

I recently upgraded to 12.0.259, and suddenly my backup program says that I have gigabytes of files that need to be backed up! Without my changing any settings, and without notifying me that my files were going to be modified, apparently MC decided it wanted to update the cover art of my files and went along happily modifying files that I had ripped years ago!

I don't want my files modified unless I ask for it. If there's a new option to update cover art, it should be *disabled* by default.

Media Center's Auto-Import will get cover art for files that have no art.  The option is here:
Options > Library & Folders > Run auto-import in background
Options > Library & Folders > Get cover art

If you're very worried about changes to files, you can disable all tagging in:
Options > General > Update tags when file info changes

(p.s. build 259 is quite old -- you might try getting 533 from the top of this board)

I agree absolutely in this point, it should be disabled by default.
Had some problems, including waiting forever in some situations - not knowing what was going on.

Thanks,

That would probably be your firewall blocking MC and not telling you.

While this is a tricky issue for both you and us, we like the way we have it set.  It only causes an occasional problem and it has a lot of positives.  We now have well over a million cover art files, for example.

Thats great. But I see the problem in:
Options > General > Oline Metadate > Submit cover art changes to online database

Could be my firewall, and explains over a million cover art. But I wait and wait ... without being asked.
