remote server issues

hey all...

remote server doesn't seem to work for me. i've never tried it out before, so maybe i am unclear what it's supposed to do - it's for control of MC from another computer running on the same network, right?

if library server is running, then remote server is running, right? same port?
do i need to open that port in the windows firewall on the PC running MC?

um...not sure why it isn't working, and don't know what else to check. thanks.

It's configured in Options/Startup.  More in the wiki here:

yep, i had read that. that wiki is more of an initial "how to" than a troubleshooting "what if?"  ;)

There isn't much more to it than what it says there:

You do not have to go to the living room computer; you can control playback from your laptop via the Web.

To enable Remote Server:

On the main Media Center computer, go to Tools > Options > Startup > Run Remote Server.
The default port is set to 80. Click on the entry to change it.
To access Media Center from another computer, open a web browser and type
http://yourMediaCenterPCsName:theAssignedPortNumber Example: http://livingroomPC:80

Your assumption above isn't correct:

You must set it up to be started, and you must use a different port.  No two servers or services can (or at least should) use the same port.

so, i still can't figure this out.

- remote server running on port 808 (library server off)
- port 808 open on PC and router
- safari on laptop pointed to http://192.168.1.2:808
- connection times out

it's practically too simple to screw up, you know?

http://192.168.1.2:808 isn't an IP address that can be seen from outside your network unless you set up your router to forward to it.

Try the same test running your browser on the same local PC.

yes, i know, i was trying from my own network.

i just rebooted everything on my network, and now it's working. beats me why. oh well.
