Media OS -- the new file associations/playback options
« on: November 05, 2008, 06:16:57 pm »

1. NEW: Added "File Types" options page that allows configuring the file association and playback method (including external applications) for each file type. [still a work in progress]

It's the new OS!  I use MC as much as I can to browse various non-MC playable files like Blu-Ray, Video game roms, and guitar tabliture.

Media OS -- the new file associations/playback options

We are trying to figure out how much belongs in the "File Types" options.

For example, does DirectShow filter selection belong under "Playback method" once you pick DirectShow, instead of being in Options > Playback > ...DirectShow...?

Also, what settings should be zone specific, and what should be global?

Thanks for any feedback.

First blush and gut instinct... I'd say yes.  Interesting idea though.  I'm going to think about it a bit.

This is very handy so far, I really like this option.  There might be a case or two that gets tricky, I'll play a while and report back more details.  First look, thumbs up!

Should we try to make it so you make the actual change in the list (in-place-edits) instead of below?

The current approach takes more clicking and mouse movement, but provides room for explanation and addition of more options.

(we considered allowing both in-place and editing below, but were fairly certain a lot of users would find one and then never find the other)

I prefer in-place editing, but I don't want to lose the options.

Hi,

I'm playing with this new "file type" feature and I'm wondering wether it would be a good idea to have the possibility to add new file types in MC other than the built-in ones ? This could well be in this new dialog.
e.g. .vsd for viso files or .sdr for smartdraw images

This would allow for those additional file types to be auto-imported just like the others. Currently MC only allows manual import for any file types.

Just thinking out loud...

Have a nice day,

Thanks Mike,

\Data\Default Resources\FileAssociations.xml

There was a time... It was long ago, when I considered myself as a kind of expert on JR player. But this was a time when MC was called "Jukebox".
Since then so much has changed, so many new features introduced, MC has become so complex that I now feel rather stupid with my tiny bit of knowledge on MC :-[

Thanks again Mike for pointing me to the right direction,

Christian

While we're digging into file associations...

Is there any chance we could break out a few filetypes individually in some way?

For instance... I want MC to playback MPEG files, but not every filetype that's listed under the MPEG type. For me, specifically, I don't want MC to playback m2t or m2ts files. Those are the filetypes that my HD camcorder records in - MC can't play them, so I'd like them to just open up in Sony Vegas. But I can't seperate them out in MC. It's either all or nothing.

I can probably override just those two filetypes from Windows itself, but then everytime I mess with MC's filetypes I have to go back and fix that again.

I agree with this. I'd really like to add .cbr and .cbz to the list, for instance. It's cool that I can apparently do this anyway using the XML file, but it couldn't really hurt to let us do it from the GUI, could it?

I think it's fine how it is, but I would add the directshow filter selection/options to this page.

So if you select the J River engine (directshow) then there is a way to select the filters/renderer directly from this page.

Can we have the new tab option available in this dialog too please?
Most useful really for filetype viewable in IE, such as PDF & HTML, but could possibly be extended further :)

Cheers

I'm loving the flexibility this feature offers!

I agree with this though:

I think it's going to become confusing having the directshow config under "playback options" (which if per filetype anyway) and everything else here.

I really like the new file asociations feature. Its much more reliable than having to make a media type of data and using windows associations as many times applications will hijack the file associations. The one issue I'm having is in creating custom associations in the Fileassociations.xml file. I'd actually rather not do this at all but when I play transport stream files (.ts, .m2ts, etc) the video tears quite noticably. I played with filter and renderer settings for countless hours and couldn't get the tearing to go away. PowerDVD plays these files perfectly every time. I finally gave up and just associated these files with PowerDVD. In order to use the new file association feature I had to customize the xml file to separate the mpeg files from the transport stream files as they are currently all grouped as mpeg. I can now use a custom file association fir PowerDVD when playing transport stream files. Of course, once I install an updated version of MC the xml file is overwritten with the default. I wonder if any one of the following alternatives could work.

1) Can a custom fileassociations.xml file be created under a new name (ie: customfileassociations.xml) which is used in place of the standard file if present?
2) Can these transport stream files be separated from other mpeg files in the default xml file?

In a coming build:
Changed: Made settings avaialble for "MPEG Transport Video (m2t,m2ts,tp,ts)" independent from standard MPEG videos.

I agree with others that the directshow filter choices should be in the same place as the new file extensions. You almost always want to work on both things together.

Gentle bump for this. It's quite a pain to keep moving around between options panes to get files playing right.

this is a sweet option!

how does one send multiple files to an external program?

with AVI files, I select multiple files within JRiver, right click and select Play  - but this only sends one of the files to an external program. I've tried using both the default external program and the custom external program. For custom external program, the argument is "[Filename]". I am trying to send multiple files at the same time to Zoom Player. Thanks!
