DVD audio problem
« on: December 18, 2008, 04:21:26 am »

Hello, I use MC11 on my laptop to organise and play a large music library and it's ideal.  I've just built a HTPC to act as a media centre in the lounge and I'm trying out the different software options.  At the moment I'm not hearing any sound when playing a DVD.  I've got an nVidia (Geforce 8200) based motherboard and USB soundcard (Scott Nixon tube DAC).  MC12 and nVidia PureVideo deocoder demo versions installed.

Sound is fine for audio files and playing CDs.  USB DAC is set as the default Directsound output.  DVD playback is fine through WMP using the nVidia decoder and USB DAC.  nVidia decoder option selected in MC12 DVD options.  No output for any of the three USB DAC and Directsound output options.  All Directshow filter boxes ticked.

Thought it might be the decoder software but I'm at a bit of a dead end after it just worked in WMP.  Anyone have any ideas for a solution?  I haven't tried the minijack outputs on the back yet but if I can't get it to work through the USB DAC I don't want to use MC12.
Any help much appreciated.

Have you checked what audio decoder MC12 uses during DVD playback? In MC12 you can right-click the main display during playback for getting the DirectShow graph.

Also in MC12 you can select the used codecs. I don't have MC12 installed on this PC, but the settings are in Options > Playback if I recall correctly. They changed in MC13 a bit.

nVidia is probably a fine MPEG2 video decoder (I have it installed on one of our PCs), but I don't remember if nVidia provides also an audio-decoder component. In any case I'd recommend trying the AC3filter and FFDShow audio decoders. These two provide the best configuration options for channel mixing and volume normalization and can handle DD and DTS equally well. For video decoding you could the try the dScaler 5 decoder. It provides excellent configuration options.

The easiest way to get the FFDShow codec is to install the CCCP codec pack. It is available here: http://www.cccp-project.net/
Links for the other codecs:
AC3filter: http://ac3filter.net/
DScaler 5: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/deinterlace/DScaler5008.exe?modtime=1140257948.
All these codecs are free.
