DRIVE COMPATIBILITY FOR TAGS
« on: October 08, 2003, 11:21:08 am »

Hello,  I am new to media jukebox. I checked the goldenhawk site as reccommended for drives that are compatible with media jukebox for id3 tagging.  I was surprised to find only a handful of drives listed.  I don't have any of those but my drive literature says it supports CD Text.  Am I to believe that only a few drives will actually take advantage of ID3 tagging or am I missing something.  My drive is a brand new IDE 52x24x52.

ID3 tags and CD Text are two separate things. A CD Text capable drive will be able to read artist/album/track info from a cd if the cd has the CD Text info on it. Most commercial cds don't. Most cd burning software gives you the option to add CD Text when you burn a cd if your drive is CD Text capable.

Id3 tags are a bit of data that contains artist/album/track info that is appended to either the beginning or end of a compressed audio file (such as an MP3). Being able to read and/or write ID3 tags is dependent upon the software you use to catalog or play those files.

To complicate things further, not only does your drive need to be CD Text capable, but the software you are using to play or rip your cds must also be CD Text capable. If this is the case, the software can use the CD Text info to create ID3 tags when ripping and compressing the audio.

Thanks for the info. It gave me a little more understanding of id3 and cd text but it doesn't solve my problem of how to get my mp3's with id3 tags to burn to cd as cda files with id3 info intact.  Your software and my cd burner both support id3 and cd text.  The only problem now is how to use it.

you can not burn ID3 tags to a CD in Audio format

MC9 has a newer burner driver than MC8 and supports newer drives that also burn CD-Text

If you can't pass ID3 tags on to the audio CD, what good are ID tags for anyway?  Do you always have to consult a list to see what song and artist are playing?  Also , you say that media center has better support for ID3 tagging.  Do you mean the tags will transfer from the MP3 file to the CDA file in Media center but not in media jukebox?

Cd Burners That Support CD-Text Will Burn Artist Info To The Disk Using "CD-text" if it is compatable with MJ8. MC9 is compatable with More New CD Burners Than MJ8 Since MC9 Is New MJ8 is like a year Old.

CDA format does not Support ID3 Tags

well you need to know audio format disks were made back in the early 70's and the only info on them was Audio01, Audio02 etc... for tracks they did not think that maybe in the future someone might want the text to the song on the CD since it was printed on the case.

A computer for the home was not thinkable by most people and if they did have one they would needed 5 houses to put it in with a large cooling tower maybe 100 feet tall.
