April 1st: MC13 destroyed my brand new laptop
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:50:13 am »

So I just finished installing MC13 on my new Dell Studio 15. It was the first (and as it turned out, only) piece of software I installed on this sexy laptop. As I hit the final button on the install dialog (to run MC13), my wrist clipped my coffee cup. Only a tiny bit of coffee spilled on the keyboard before I slammed the lid/screen down on the laptop. Since the laptop wasn't fully on the the desk, this motion caused the Dell to topple and hit the floor.
When I opened the lid, I was dismayed to see that the screen was shattered. I had heard that MC13 caused some PCs to become unstable and crash, which is exactly what happened to my laptop. Normally it's balanced just fine where it was on the desk, but I think installing MC13 made it unstable. MC causes my desktop machine to crash occasionally but never shatters the screen like that of the laptop. I thought the crash wasn't too bad, but since laptops are probably less robust than desktop PCs, I guess that's what you get.
Anyway, at the risk of sounding rude to the MC staff, can someone please look into this obvious installation bug. And before Jim chimes in to ask me whether I had disabled my anti-virus software (which came with the laptop), I have to add that yes I did. In fact I went the extra mile and made sure I had a virus or two from surfing dodgy websites before trying to install MC13.

Please do something about this, otherwise I will revert to the excellent, bug-free combination of iTunes, PowerDVD and Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

EDIT: So the 'joke' has gone long enough; I'm editing the title in case someone wanting to buy MC is just problem-thread-title browsing.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

You cannot go wrong here!  Honestly, I'm appalled to hear that such a catastrophic bug has not been caught by the team's fly swatters.  I may have to follow you on that iTunes thing.  I setup VirtualBox on my Mac and can only breathe a sigh of relief it didn't destroy my MacBook Pro.

I'll restrain from analyzing the events that took place.  I've learned too many times that things happen and you can't do anything about them...I mean literally.

Well tonight, I replied to: a spam post, very slow MC, and MC destroying a laptop.  Me staying up is bad luck.

I sure hope for your sake this story is fiction.  I mean, after all, calling a laptop sexy, is just plain creepy.    ;D

Sorry for your coffee-laptop-MC crash.  Please reinstall, drive-thru, come again.

The bug appears that you had some whiskey in your coffee which made you loopy enough to write such a lame april fool's thread, but nice try anyway.  ;D ;D

You know the day after I received the Dell, I got an email from HP about some great prices on better spec'd laptops. :(

You need to defrag your hard drive first. If you don't then MC will only get installed on one side of the drive, causing it to become unbalanced. Spinning up an unbalanced hard drive could cause the laptop to become physically unstable and precipitate a fall.

AHHH!  It was posted then!  I didn't realize the coincidence.

My friend always told me to keep my files in lots of folders or they will all get stuck on one side of the hard drive, causing it to lose its balance.  Bad things can happen.

There is a Paper Fish on Your Back.

I checked and there was nothing. Oh wait, you were joking... LOL

Seriously, is this a reference to something that I'm not hip enough to get?

I truly hope the laptop problem is an April fools comment.  With the recent joint announcement from Microsoft and J River that MC13 will be replacing Windows Media Player, I would not want to see a joke potentially upset this deal.  There are also rumors that Itunes may also be replaced by MC13; If true, that is even more important to not put at risk.

I think you're confused. MC13 isn't replacing Media Player per se. J River just bought Microsoft today, so there will be only one Media center from this day forward.

I saw something about that on CNN.
