Tree Pane Usability
« on: April 21, 2009, 07:39:24 am »

So I was playing around with closing the tree pane and seeing how it would be to use the program like that. I hovered over a thumbnail and clicked "Tag". Nothing happened.

I know why nothing happened. But would a new user? I'm just a little suprised that clicking Tag didn't either open up the tree pane and the Tag AW, or that MC doesn't hide the Tag option underneath a thumbnail when the tree pane is closed. Personally, I think the former is the right way to go.

And I know this is probably analagous to the whole mute issue that's been debated and apparently dropped. But before Jim or Matt points out my apparent hypocrisy, I do see a difference between what I'm suggesting above and the current behavior of MC unmuting the audio.

First and foremost, this automatic action from MC only affects MC. It isn't opening a closed pane for another application. Secondly, by clicking the Tag option, I'm explicitly telling MC I want to open the Tag AW. MC can't do that without opening the pane back up.

I use MC the way you describe - no tree view - I have all my views accessible through the Navigation/Favourites menu at the top, and agree this is a bit of a hassle. Personally though I wouldn't like the AW to come up - I'm not a fan of it. However, what I would like is for the current view to switch to (or open a new tab with) a list of the selected item(s), and go into edit mode.

After a little more thought, it occurred to me that it's not the Action Window I dislike, but the fact it's dependent on the tree view. If it could float around and be size configurable that would be ideal imo.

Agreed.

I just dislike the tree generally, and don't like the fact that sometimes I have to use it.  If I have an Audio tab open, I can switch it to Images or Video using the drop down providing the tree pane is closed (although only if I first switch to another tab and back...not sure if this is a bug?) but if I open a new tab it goes to Start (in MC12 it went to last location, which was more useful), and I can't get anywhere else without opening the tree.

Good idea!

+1 .. I've always wanted it to be detachable.

Personally, I find the tree is also out of whack. I've never, and most likely will never, liked the Audio / Images / Video buttons, and really really think I should be able to re-order the current tree items (I REALLY want playing Now to stay at the top)

I mentioned this myself, almost two years ago...

On a related note, I would really like if, when working with the tree hidden and choosing something like the "Tag" option beneath a thumbnail, that the tree, and therefore the action window, would automatically unhide so that the action window, which has essentially been requested by clicking on "Tag", would be automatically available.

I would have thought that if a new user had hidden the tree, then chosen the "Tag" option, they could be left scratching their heads wondering why clicking "Tag" doesn't appear to do anything at all.
