Unable to RIP with v8.x
« on: July 16, 2002, 04:26:13 pm »

I've upgraded fron v7 to v8. Now my Toshiba 6401b 40x SCSI-2 CD-ROM won't dead the first track on a CD when I try to RIP. It worked perfectly under v7.x.........is there something I can do to make this work? The system is using an Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller.

I'm having problems too - but slightly different. My first CD (Toshiba SR-R1202) will rip the first CD fine, but after that my CD drive is left in a state where it skips on all CD's. Rebooting fixes the problem, but rebooting between rip's is killing me ;-)

Try upgrading your ASPI drivers from adaptec website and use ASPI when ripping. Tell me if it works :)

Just installed newest ASPI and updated Nero (as suggested in another thread). Still no luck. Any other thoughts?

Any other rippers worth trying to compare behaviour?

Thought I would add some more color:

Media Jukebox  8.0.318
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 1592 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 319 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows 2000  Workstation 5.0 Service Pack 2 (Build 2195)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2600.0000
ComCtl32.dll: 5.50.4704.1100
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2600.0000
Shell32.dll: 5.00.3502.4718
wnaspi32.dll: 4.71 (0001) , ASPI for Win32 (95/NT) DLL, Copyright ゥ 1989-2002 Adaptec, Inc.
Aspi32.sys: 4.71 (0001)

Plus:

TOSHIBA SD-R1202 DVD/CD-RW combo drive - latest (non-hack) firmware.
Asus P4S333 (SIS) Motherboard
Nero 5.5.9.0
Ripping in 'IDE', 'Digital Secure', 'Max Speed' mode to uncompressed WAV.

Problem seems to be reliably that the first disk ripped works, but the CD drive is left in a state that means so oapplications can play back or rip CD.

Gavin

Do you have Nero's INCD installed?

JimH,

Wow - fast reply!!

I'm not sure - what is INCD? How can I check?

I really need to kill off Nero, but I'm not sure if its uninstall will zap everything.

i think "INCD" is listed in the notify window (lower right corner) right clicking on it and a Exit\Close should disable it untill you reboot.

I don't have it on this computer so I am not sure.

Cajo-
Since your drive is SCSI, make sure in "Device Settings" that the "Type" field is set to ASPI.

Gavin & Roger-
Not sure what's going on here.
When you say it skips on subsequent CD's, do you mean it skips during playback from the CD, or you rip the CD's and have skips in the resultant files?
One possibility: There have been a couple of reports of problems with the Adaptec ASPI 4.7X software. If you have Adaptec hardware or software you could try going back to 4.6 using this link:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?cat=%2fOperating|PLS|System%2fMicrosoft|PLS|Windows|PLS|95&filekey=aspi32.exe
Or you could search for "ForceASPI" on the net. This program installs Adaptecs 4.6 version of ASPI.

I think the InCD software must be removed using "Add/Remove programs" from control panel, then rebooting.

JohnT,

Thanks for the reply.

First of all, no sign of InCD on the box - so that's not it. As for ASPI, I started with ForceASPI (I was using SmartRipper - I'm hoping for ripped DVD support in MJ one day ;-) and 4.6. I upgraded to 4.7.1 with no change in behaviour.

The problem is with CD playback. The CD drive and playback are fine until I rip a CD. Once I have finished the first rip (which is perfect), the CD drive becomes confused. It just can't keep it's place on the CD - like the CD was very scratched - jumping all over the track. This means that playback or ripping are both imposible until a reboot.

This is driving me nuts - otherwise MJ is great. Can anyone recommend any alternative rippers to keep me going?

Cheers,

Gavin

Just noticed, is there any reason for you folks to not use build 333? After having a ton of burner problems recently, this one seemed kill all the demons that took over the burner. Maybe a try?

Change media or try this:

1.  Check you previous installation

* run ASPICHK (included in the aspi_v471.exe )
* if WOWPOST.EXE or WINASPI.DLL show up and you are running winXP then search
  for those files in your windows directory (inc subdirs and hidden files)
  and DELETE them they are not needed for aspi on XP.

2.  install ASPI 4.71 ( or later ) from adaptec

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/
drivers_by_product.html?sess=no&cat=%2fProduct%2fASPI-4.70&prodkey=ASPI-4.70

Use the INSTALL.BAT to install after unzipping to make sure the
correct files only are installed.

3. Windows NT/2K/XP  MUST have these reg keys added if they aren't allready,
otherwise some apps ( EAC, audiocatalyst, CDRWIN )wont show any aspi devices at all :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASPI32\Parameters]
"ExcludeMiniports"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASPI32]
"ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
"Start"=dword:00000002
"Type"=dword:00000001

double click the included .reg file to add these if you are not
experienced editing the registry, as the adaptec installer
currently doesn't set all of these up, this is the source
of everyones problems.

4. reboot.

This has worked on EVERY XP/2K box I've tried
but, if it still doesn't work, try changing "Start"=dword:00000002
to "Start"=dword:00000001 in the .reg file then run it again,
and then reboot.
