Okay - this one is starting to get annoying. With Version 13.0.171 as part of a very simple search workflow:

1. In standard "album" view - I type in some search term in the search box
2. If a target is found - I may examine the files or hit play.
3. However - 3 times out of 10 - even if I do nothing - when I click the "Back" (Alt-Left) button near the "Album" tab - to presumably return to "Album" view - MC freezes hard followed by the "Media Center has Stopped Working" with the standard Vista options of waiting, killing the program etc etc.
4. There is an AppCrash listing in the bottom of the dialog - which I will screen cap at some point.

Has anyone seen this before? I am running Vista 32 Business. I am thinking perhaps video? I thought it may have something to do with Auto Import so that is shut off as well....

I tried enabling Logging as well...but can never get this to kick in and log it. And leaving logging on all the time is really killing my iPod syncs and general movement around the program...

Would like to hear from anyone else who has had this odd freeze...

Cheers!

Try the link called "Stability" in my signature.  It has more instructions on what you can do.

Disable all plug-ins or any other software that talks to MC.

Try letting it go for a few minutes to see if it recovers.

Jim,

I have reviewed your "stability" link and I have no other plugs or any other software talking to MC and I have let it go for like 10 minutes with no recourse. It's a hard crash and something within MC that rears it's ugly head only when certain conditions are met.

I will continue to "search and click" until I can reproduce.

When you say "hard crash", what do you mean?

When you say "hard crash", what do you mean?

In the Vista dialog that pops up - if I click on More Info - I get a listing (according to the OS) with some parameters that occurred. The first item listed is "AppCrash"...and in all my time with Vista - if that comes up...the app is not waiting or trying to do something...it's dead. No choice but to kill it and restart...if that ain't a hard crash...I don't know what is.

Here is what Event Viewer saw it as....

Faulting application Media Center 13.exe, version 13.0.171.0, time stamp 0x4a1d24b8, faulting module Media Center 13.exe, version 13.0.171.0, time stamp 0x4a1d24b8, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x004c81e2, process id 0xb8, application start time 0x01c9e9d4a2f85165.

Again - I will turn on logging and try to kick it in....

Cheers!

Jim,

Finally! I had logging enabled...and managed to nab this error condition - here's what was captured:

Media Center; Version: 13.0.171; Types: 16351
0293173: 2408: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Unhandled exception -- program crashing
0293173: 2408: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Message: 33769, wParam: 172980368, lParam: 1, Window class: MJFrame

Ideas?

Cheers!

Cannot recall exactly. This one was different tho...no search involved but definitely occurred as the "Back" button was pressed. I will retrace my steps and keep logging enabled...

I meant in the log.  The lines before that are important.

Sorry about that. I just got it to kick in with plenty in the log. For the record - I opened MC...clicked Play (in Album View) on the Abbey Lincoln album...let the first track start playing and then clicked on the "Now Playing" view in the tree.

I listened to a portion of the first track and then advanced to the second Abbey Lincoln track...listened for a bit - and then hit the "Back" button...and crashola.

Here's about half the log - to the end with the crash...

Turn off podcasts to test.

Turned off podcasts - still crashing....see below. This instance was just moments ago - Steps:

From "Artist" thumbnail view - I clicked on Coldplay to show the two albums in the library. I then did a Convert Format on one album. Then - since I could sense the crash coming - I turned on Logging and then clicked the "Back" button to return to the "Artist" view...and like clockwork - down she went...here's the log

Hope we can figure this one out - it's a very odd - but VERY annoying bug.

Cheers!

I asked before, but are you using any third party software with MC?  Anything unusual at all about your installation?

Are the files stored locally?  And the database?

Can you reproduce it on another PC?

Jim,

1. No third party stuff at all - clean install only.
2. Two libraries in play - one local, one on the server. Crash happens with both
3. Database - I assume is stored locally as well.
4. Will try to reproduce on another box.

Cheers!

Jim

Here's another...just searched for a song...found it and dragged it to a new playlist...then hit "Back" to return to "Genre" view this time - so the search can address the entire library...and down she went...

Let me know what you think...I had 4 other similar crashes yesterday...this is REALLY getting annoying...and it's the only bug that I have...other than this MC13 has been as stable an app as I can remember....what the heck is going on with this "back" button? SHould I just stop using it altogether...? We get the same error message everytime...no ability to trace MJFrame or any of this other logged stuff?

What do you have in common?  OS, video hardware, third party plug-ins, skin, etc.

i myself can't see any pattern regarding OS or plugins, tried with win 2k3 and xp, totally different machines (3), with plugins and without..

but when i try to use it, my experience is that the crashes are much more frequent when going backwards when i have entered a detailed view, the one that you browse "down". (not with panes)

i have not experienced any other "crash issues" with MC13

Have posted this a few times before, not sure if it's related, but it does happen every time for me:

Switch to Party Mode or another Library (or even try to find Library Servers and fail)
MC switches all views to Start
[Optionally: click on eg. Audio, to make sure it has somewhere available to go back to]
Press back
MC crashes

What do you have in common?  OS, video hardware, third party plug-ins, skin, etc.

Jim,

OS: Vista Business 32 bit
Graphics: eVGA (nVidia) 8600 GTS (256MB)
Driver Version 7.15.11.7519 - nVIDIA ForceWare 175.19
Third Party Plugs: None
Skin: Noire (stock on install)

Lasse_Lus,

Thanks for the thread link. EXACT same error as I get in the error log. Gotta be something going on under that "Back" button. But I agree with the others in your Feb thread - may have a lot to do with what MC is going "back" to. Over here tho - it happens very frequently with no pattern to what view I had open previously or anything.

Like I said - other than this nasty ass bug - MC13 has been rock solid

Cheers!

Media Center; Version: 13.0.171; Types: 5597
0058001: 1436: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Unhandled exception -- program crashing
0058001: 1436: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Message: 33769, wParam: 67999352, lParam: 1, Window class: MJFrame

Steps in this one:

1. Started Media Center
2. Switched from local (my hard drive) to server library (network drive)
3. MC opened to the "start" page - even tho I NEVER want it to do that (another bug for another day)
4. In the tree under Audio - I clicked Artist - which gives me thumbnails of each album with Artist name underneath.
5. Hovered over "The Band" and out of the three links "Play", "Album" or "File" - I clicked album
6. Two albums appear and the view switches to Album Thumbnails at the top and File Details in the mid/bottom pane.
7. Since I knew a crash was immient - I turned on logging at this step.
8 Clicked the back button - crash was like clockwork.

Restarted MC and repeated the exact same steps and no crash.

Jim,

Here's a bit more - this is from the Event Viewer from yesterday's crash....this specific log entry  mentions an obscure .dll this time (msls31.dll)...may help a bit...

Faulting application Media Center 13.exe, version 13.0.171.0, time stamp 0x4a1d24b8, faulting module msls31.dll, version 3.10.349.0, time stamp 0x49b3aa7b, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0001711d, process id 0xcc0, application start time 0x01c9f58ce7941d00.

I did a quick google search.  One site said this:
Quote
msls31.dll is a process belonging to the IE program . msls31.dll is the library file used by Internet Explorer and Word applications to provide Unicode support.

Does it only happen if you've switched libraries at some point during the program run?

I'm wondering if something in the navigation history is pointing to an unloaded library. (which would be a bug, but we need to be able to reproduce it to fix it)

Thanks.

Matt,

Thanks for the update. Hmmm...you may have something there - I reviewed the Vista crash logs via Event Viewer and there does seem to be a obtuse pattern to this - Event Viewer has recorded 7 or 8 similar crashes aover the last two weeks and they all seem to occur at first startup...and I do frequently fire up MC - with the library last loaded of course and then switch to a different one and carry on...

Interestingly - yesterdays crash did occur less than a minute into the session - as you can see in the "steps" history - I did switch libraries and then the crash occurred mere seconds after that.

Conversely - here at the day gig - I have never seen this crash ever - and I only have a single library (local) on an XP SP3 machine. Come to think of it - in my studio - where I have MC installed to playback FLAC files stored on the server - it too only has a single library and I cannot ever recall this crash occurring there...

Not sure how it's implemented or used - but the Nav History should be cleared at shutdown

Perhaps we are onto something here.....:) I will be happy to test this theory when I get home. Progress...love it!

GOT IT!

It's the library switch. Steps:

1. Load MC (using whatever lib was last loaded)
2. Switch libraries
3. Do a search...click on a stack of album thumbnails - anything to get the "back" button lit up.
4. Click Back...
5. Crashola.

I can do this repeatedly now - as long as the library switch happens.

So - corrupt library? Bug? Anything else I can try before I attempt to start "clean"

Look forward to any updates!
