FLAC and PS3, again
« on: September 26, 2009, 06:44:27 pm »

For the past week I've been trying to stream my music collection to PS3. MP3 streams just fine, the PS3 will connect and "see" all the flac files, i have played with the built-in transcoder, no matter what settings i choose always get "unsupported file type", googled and searched thru forums and elsewhere, no one seems to have a sure way to do it, can JRiver 14 do it? If so, what settings should i have? Do i need another plug-in?   I got everything else working, last step before i purchase the software.

 Thanks

FLAC probably won't play, but our UPnP server can convert.  Try forcing conversion if necessary.

Thanks for the reply. I understand the PS3 will not play Flac w/out converting.. I have tried all possible settings on the UPNP server options, including always convert. If "always" is selected, i seem to loose the ability of playing MP3 and Flac still won't play. There are 4 possible re-encoding options,  i have tried them all, at all the diferent bitrates. Some combinations the PS3 will not receive info and the artist/albums and such won't even display, Using VBR normal seemss to work the best, as all the info can be seen and the track will try to play, after about 20 or so seconds, ps3 will trow error message..  What would preferred settings be? Any other plug-in that can be used?

thanks again

Try comparing an MP3 file that works with a converted one that won't.  What is the difference?

128Kps is probably safest. Embedded cover art might make a difference.

If you can't get it, it's possible to create a second test library of MP3 only.  See File/Library/Library Manager.

I had made a small library with Flac and mp3's, the mp3 will play just fine as long as "always" convert is not selected. When i try to play the FLAC files, selecting "always convert" and 128kps the PS3 will get some sort of valid info, beacuse it doesn't trow a message right away, after about 20-30 seconds will show "unsupported file type".
Maybe i'm not understanding this "feature" right, if i select "always convert" in UPNP options, i should be able to have flac file converted to MP3 on the go, right?

Yes, but check your conversion options and make sure MP3 is selected.

Try turning on logging.

Try changing detection from automatic to advanced and try some of the options.

Our wiki has a PS3 entry:

It wouldn't do any good right now.  We don't have time to look at it.

This has worked for others in the past.  I don't know why it isn't.

Did you ever test converting FLAC to MP3 outside of this scenario?

I haven't been able to "see" anyone that got it to work, many looking foir answers, yes.

I can use media center to convert Flac to MP3, PS3 will play the new MP# w/out any issues.. It's only when converting on the go.

Does anyone here managed to get this to work? if so, what settings you use?

thanks

Letter by letter. I also found other bits of info here and there, still haven't been able to get it going.

Out of topic, installed diferent program (PS3 Media server) and Flac worked out of the box, looks like they use the same decoder, not givin up yet, don't know what elese to try.

 Thanks

I have it working with MP3 files following the instructions in the wiki. My MP3 files are 320 kbps with embedded cover art.

I assume you have already tried this, but just in case. Did you try Convert Audio if necessary, with Encoder set to MP3 encoder?

Is the PS3 old enough that firmware could be an issue?

I created a small flac library and tested it. I cannot make it work. I get a message "The data type is not supported".

I tried it with "Convert audio if necessary" and "Always convert audio". Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it looks like MC is not converting the flac to MP3.

  Randy,
Thats what i've seen to, the converting part does not work.. I have no issues at all with mp3, only with converting flac to mp3..

I have a Slim with latest firmware.

I have the latest firmware as well.

All of my music is MP3 320 kbps. I chose that so I would not have to worry about conversions.

Based on that I don't have experience doing conversions. So maybe I'm doing something wrong. All I did was rip a cd in a flac format and set up my UPnP options to convert to MP3. Maybe there is more required to make the conversions work.

Flac conversion seems to be working for me with the same upnp settings. I haven't tried it on a ps3 yet but I will tonite or tomorrow. When it first starts to play I get the file "Streaming Encoder.mp3" in the
Documents and Settings->Application Data->J River->Media Center 14->temp directory.
You might want to check your mp3 settings for conversion. Try something simple like cbr 192 (cbr/abr and check the constant bitrate checkbox).

I spent few more hours reading and trying settings and just can't get it to go, either i get "not recognized" or "unsupported file type".
Being able to Decode/Stream to PS3 very important to me, just not in the mood to convert 50GB worth of flac to mp3  :)

Hopefully someone will get this to work.

 Thanks again

I couldn't get it to work either.
I did get a good log though so we'll check it out.

I've got the upnp server to stream flac to the ps3 by converting it to L16 (wave big endian) which is supported by the DLNA standard. The changes haven't been incorporated into a build yet as they need some polishing. I'll keep you apprised.

Tony,

It's fixed in version 14.0.84 which you can find here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=54436.0

I tested it myself and it works fine. Here is a related thread: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=54434.0

If you have a problem, please post here and I will try to help.
