Hauppage WinTV-HVR-2250 + Theater View Crashes (+ Win7?)
« on: October 09, 2009, 10:47:56 am »

This tuner works great in normal view.  It also initializes and starts fine in Theater View. However, it crashes once you try to go back a menu or view the tv guide while playing TV.  This has been reproducible for awhile, however, I thought it might be due to the immature nature of Windows 7, so I didn't want to let you guys know until I had the RTM version of Windows 7 AND a stable Windows 7 driver for this TV Tuner.  These are now available, and the crash still occurs.  Detailed steps to reproduce crash:

1.  Use a WinTV-HVR-2250
2.  Start up Theater View
3.  Go to TV Guide
4.  Start a channel
5.  Go 'back'
6.  Crash should occur.

This is probably a video driver issue or similar.  I had a crash like this that was solved by updating Microsoft's DirectX.

The Windows 7 release may solve it.  If not, try updating the video driver.

You could try adjusting Theater View settings for video downward.  Frames per second and video quality.

I am running the latest version of DirectX, since I am running Windows 7 RTM (the final build that is released to manufacturers).  Also, I have the latest Radeon drivers installed.

I am using a Radeon HD4830, I would be pretty shocked if this card had any performance issues with MediaCenter.

Everybody has bugs.  ATI is no exception.

The DirectX update I was talking about above was on a new Sony VAIO notebook with Vista.  Same situation as you have.  Mint condition Windows.

Neither is J River ;D. And quite frankly, this bug does not effect Windows Media Center, so I will use that until the bug(s) are sorted out, whoever is responsible.

Like all software, JRiver's products sometimes have bugs.  We fix whatever we can find.  In this case, you're using a version of Windows that has not been released.

If this were a JRiver bug, it should be reproduceable by others.  Yours is the only report I know of.

I can't reproduce it.

Did you try the Theater View settings I mentioned?

I use a 2250 with Windows 7 and Theater View and have never had a problem like this.

Simply showing Theater View in any way while playing TV causes a crash?

I removed the discussion about where to get Windows 7.  Let's focus on trying to solve the television issue.

Providing a crash log might be a good next step.  There are instructions here: http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Stability

Matt, I have found the cause of the crash - it occurs when MC attempts to pause playback.  The 'workaround' for this was disabling "pause playback" when entering theater view.  I'm currently watching TV from my Lay-Z-Boy, so I won't be getting the error code right now, but when playback is paused it gives a specific error code.  I'll get that on here later if you want it.

As Matt said, a crash log might help.

As I said, I'll get the error to you when I have time.

Here's the log file.  The error that I see onscreen when this occurs is the one at line 5279105: "DoBufferProcessingLoop: Error 80004005 from FillBuffer!!!"

EDIT: I should add that this is when the program crashes.
