What kind of sound system is everybody using with MJ?
« on: July 03, 2002, 11:54:50 am »

I thought it might be interesting to everybody to find out what kind of sound system we are all using with MJ. Right now, I am using a set of Boston computer speakers with included sub for the fronts. I am using a an old Yamaha amp to drive a set of KLH bookshelf speakers for the rears. Now that I have MJ, and are starting to rip all my CDs, I am going to move my computer to the living room, and hook it to my main sound system, which is a Sony surround sound amp driving Linear Dynamic column speakers for the fronts, KLH speakers for the  center, a KLH 12 inch self-powered sub, and a set of Cerwin Vega bookshelf speakers for the rears. Should sound pretty good. By the way, I am using a Sound Blaster Live card, what sound card are you using?

I'm actually using an AudioTron (from TurtleBeach) to play my
files (rather than playing them from MJ).  I like it.

Is this going to be a bragging session for stereo systems?
Well, the system in my office is a pair of Mackie 824 studio
monitors.  These are fantastic speakers, and are even self
powered, so you don't need a separate amp.  They are a bit
pricey, though.  I first saw these speakers when I was visiting
RealWorld studios in England.  They mix all of their albums
(including Peter Gabriel's about-to-be-released album) on these
speakers.

I also just got a SoundLink from US Robotics, so I can play the
same music from the stereos in my living room and bedroom.  It
is really nice to have the same music playing from 3 different
stereos around the house.

From the looks of the buttons and displays, those are pretty high tech tin cans :)

wmleler: Is this going to be a bragging session for stereo systems?

Not really. I am an electronic technician by trade, and all of my systems are put together from stereo components that either customers didn't want to fix and let me have, or from pieces I have picked up at garage sales and goodwill stores. My linear Dynamic speakers are 20 years old, but after doing some shopping a while back, thinking I should replace them with something newer and better, I found out there was nothing better, or at least at a price I could afford. So I added a $150 dollar sub and kept my old columns. Just the shot in the arm those old columns needed, since todays movies and music have more exaggerated lows than they did 20 years ago. I'll buy a new piece of gear here and there, but for the most part, I enjoy reviving excellent older equipment that can be bought cheap by doing a little searching around.

Let's see, I'm using a Philips Acoustic Edge sound card hooked up to a Klipsch Promedia 4.2 system. Sounds absolutly fantastic.

Neighbors hate me, friends love me (or should I say the music). And MJ controls it all!

?

I have a humble Klipsch Promedia 4.1 system (connected to my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card).

4.2? -Is that 2 x Promedia 2.1 systems? (ie with 2 subs!)

wow.
(my works out to be about 400Watt rms, 112bB. TWO systems must rock.)

pc2: generic desktop speakers..not very loud; kinda annoying to say the least. it's not my computer so I don't care that much anyway.

pc3: 3 cerwin-vega it6.02 comp. sets powered by zapco.

I'm hooked into my stereo receiver via a Stereo-Link.  My receiver is an Outlaw 1050, and I have a 5.1 speaker system made by Edge Audio (now Aperion).  Outlaw and Aperion are internet-sales-only outfits I learned about in reviews on CNET and surround sound websites.  Very good quality for less money.  I've been very happy with the results, especially now that I have been ripping my CD collection like mad after downloading MJ8 last week (heard about MJ8 through CNET--maybe depending on their reviews too much).  My only problem is that I am staying up way too late ripping my CDs, and I'm dozing off at work...

Peleton:
Yup that is two 2.1 systems. Damn thing rocks!

For DVD movies the surround effect is simply amazing. Best example is in the Matrix, where Morpheus is dangling from the rope on the helicoptor. With a sub for both the front and rear, you hear the rotors rotate from the front to the back when the chopper flies over the camera.... woomph wooomph... people here love it

I'm not a technician but like BigMike my systems are always second hand.  My wife was super kind to me for my birthday so I've retired my old Marantz 2285B and now have a Naim Audio amp/preamp setup (about 10 years old), an Audiophile 2496 soundcard and a pair of Optimus (Radioshack) bookshelf speakers that my wife found at a garage sale.  We got the amp from a friend who owns a hi-fi store, after I got the new amp installed I phoned him and told him I finally had an amp that did my Radioshack speakers justice (he just groaned and said that was low even for me).

I'm definitely not an audiophile but I like sound that has a certain level of musicality once I get that from a system I'm satisfied.  In the fall I'm going to move my system and hook up my PSB Alphas but there's no panic I like what I hear now, something I never thought I'd say about a computer based sound system.

MJB on 1.1ghz celery w/Soundblaster Live, Carver Preamp into Carver 1,250 watt (max per channel) Amp.
(4) Cerwin Vega 3-way Speakers (the 12-inch Sub models).

yeah the amp has mad power..  friend of mine hooked me up with it as he actually designed the mainboards in the amp for carver before he retired from working for them and they provided him with a few of those babys for free.  volume never exceeds like '3' (the cerwin vegas' appericate it!).  LOL

At home: SB Live! 5.1, generic medium power plastic boxes with a Peavey TKO 75 (Scorpion) as a sub (running thru power amp section).

DJ Music: PC to ancient Teac Model 2 mixer to homebuilt 200 rms power amp to Assorted Leem (Korean) 12" 2 way cabs and my trusty Peavey for tight bass (I play with the graphic to suit the venue).

The Live! Platinum, I should have said.
The Optical out on the Live Drive uses a standard Toslink cable.

The Videologic sirroco amp takes optical in, it sounds pretty good, but the SB Live is the weakest link in the chain, next of course to my aging ears!

I use the Boston Acoustics BA735 2 speaker and subwoofer set that came with my gateway last year. Ive got a fairly large apt that covers the entire downstairs of this house. They are connected to a Soundblaster Audigy soundcard and i use the different equalizer settings in the Audigy controls along with the DSP built into MJ. Ive never heard a better sounding set of speakers for the price. Ive yet to hear one crack or pop out of them and ive had them cranked to the max with the treble maxed out, no distortion, not even vibration. I was considering getting a home stereo until i got this computer. With this set up, who needs one.

I don't actually listen to music via MJ. I'm using it as an archive and transfer medium for my CD's. I rip all my CD's to disk using Monkeys Audio APE for compression. Then I use MJ to copy to minidisc using a Xitel optical link and/or to CDR for playing in the car and on a PDCP at work.

I take it you are in the US of A ?  As i cannot get them to ship this Audiotron to the UK.  Is it as good as it looks?  If so maybe we could all start a petition to gety them to setup a UK distributer?

Let me know your thoughts.

Many thanks
