I am trying to switch from ZoomPlayer to MC14 as my primary video player. I have a lot of trouble in setting it up and ask for help for the following:

• How do I force MC14 to use ffdshow decoders both for video and audio? I have no success in forcing the use of ffdshow. I have tried to use the Tools->Options->Filetypes and tried setting up specific filters for specif filetypes but I can not get it to work
• How do I set-up SPDIF passthrough for AC3 DTS etc. I want to do all decoding in my AV amp. I have tried AC3Filter and setting it up to pass SPDIF. I have also set the prefer other decoder option in the AC3 filter setup. Same with DTS and DScaler but with no luck. Whatever I do i can only get 2ch Stereo.
• Is there a WIKI or user guide to explain these issues and how to set them up?

Thanks for your patience with this.  The wiki (link above) has an article on DirectShow.  That's a good place to start.  Try installing CCCP.  I'm not expert on DirectShow configuration, but I do know that a splitter is needed to separate the audio and video.  You also should not process the audio on the PC.  It should  be passed unaltered to the receiver.
I believe AC3filter would decode the audio stream on the PC and that won't work.

Tools > Options > File Types is the correct place for selecting filters.  Make sure you select "JRiver video engine (using DirectShow filters)" for "Playback Method", and then select filters from the drop down lists.  If you selected FFDShow, but MC was still not using it, maybe FFDShow was not configured to decode the type of audio/video you were trying to play.  Which type of video did you try to play?

Decoder configuration (such as AC3Filter configuration) is the right-place to set up  SPDIF.  If you check "Prefer other decoder" for AC3Filter, AC3Filter may not be automatically loaded.  So if you want to use AC3FIlter, you should check "Prefer AC3Filter".

I just went through a lot of pain trying to get passthrough of some m4v files.  Everything else worked ok, but these didn't.  I found graphedit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GraphEdit really useful to see what was going on.  In my case the splitter used was not what I thought (MPC-mp4) and it sent the output back to microsoft filters independent of what I had set in MC (i.e. AC3).  The Microsoft filters only selected the stereo stream.  The other splitter (Haali I think), showed that it could get the AC3 stream but the video wouldn't play.  Ended up just remuxing into mkv files and everything works a lot better.

Anyways, try graphedit.

A thing that can be a bit confusing in the AC3Filter configuration is that even though you tick the boxes for AC3 and DTS under SPDIF passthrough in the SPDIF pane, it won't use SPDIF until you tick the box next to Use SPDIF under Output format on the left. Also select AS IS (no change) to be sure it doesn't rearrange the channels in any way.

Thanks all... I am on travel and back tonight so I will try the suggestions this evening.

I have not inspected the setup of FFDSHOW carefully as I use it in Zoomplayer and it works great there but will do so now. The files I have tried is mainly matroska (mkv) and using the Haali splitter. Files I have tried has had both DTS and AC3 surround contained.

I will report back later today....

It shows that even if I asked for ffdshow Audio i get ACM Wraper as audio decoder... Do not know what it is or how to get rid of it.

When forcing AC3Filter, the AC3 Filter is used but I am not able to get anything else through it than 2ch stereo

I can try to remove all filters and decoders and install new by using the CCCP collection. I hesitate to do it because it is a lot of work to set up everything all over again...

I am out of suggestions......

SOLVED

I used the HDMI interface (on the video card) to transport the digital signal to the Av amp. This did not work. When I switched to using the SPDIF TOSLINK (optical) output on the motherboard everything started working normally....

Anyone understand why?

Have you tried selecting the HDMI output as audio renderer in the Video playback settings under Playback in the Options dialog? At my system I can easily switch between using the HDMI video card output or the SPDIF/analog onboard output, and they all work fine.

Tried it and it did not work! I am shure there is a parameter somewhere that has the wrong value. I am ok though using the SPDIF TOSLINK output

It's a different sound device.

My ATI HDMI output is a separate device from my onboard Realtek Toslink output; maybe changing the audio device for video playback will work.

For the life of me I could not get HDMI to work in XP SP3. I could get it to work some of the time, but it would stop working. I'm an IT Manager and a Programmer, so I know my way around computers, but could not get it to work reliably.

I decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and voila, it works flawlessly. I did some more investigation and my on-board sound card (Via) drivers are problematic with my ATI HDMI under XP. Why does it conflict with it? Who knows. Perhaps this is related to some of your issues as well?
