DLNA suggestion: change default port
« on: January 19, 2010, 03:53:26 pm »

Now that MC doesn't have any real reliance on the DLNA server running on 2869, it would be a good idea to move it to a different port, unless there's some other reason I'm not aware of.

The standard MS SSDP service runs on port 2869, so this will mean that for a lot of people the default setting will just mean the server fails.
I don't know what OSes it's enabled by default on - I'm running Windows 7 - or even if it is enabled by default. I didn't do anything deliberate to get it activated though, so it's obviously easy to end up in this position.

Maybe when MC sets it up for the first time it could work out a port to use? or just start on 2870 anyway?

Perhaps use 19891.

I got it from the random number generator at http://www.random.org/. I specified a range from 1024 through 65535.

GRC doesn't list any applications for 19891: http://www.grc.com/port_19891.htm and
it is unassigned also on this list: http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

For dynamic and private use IANA defines the range from 49152 through 65535.

Seriously speaking, I don't know if the port number should be inside a certain range.

Changing the port number didn't fix my problem, but perhaps my problem is caused by the XP problem that you have found. I tried a connection between Windows 7 and XP SP3.
