all attempts to play result in the following warning: "mj unable to play any files from playlist.  make sure the path in the music library points to the right location.  also double check to make sure you are not unintentionally filtering the files."  How do I correct this?

If you right click on one of the files, you can find it in your library (just to verify that it exists).

Filters are a playback option.

Try the latest version of MJ.  It is nicer about files that have garbage at the beginning.

Try updating your library.  "File/Library/Update library..."  Select the checkbox for "Remove files which do not exist."
Ig MJ can't find the file in the place it should be, it will remove it from the Library list.  This way you can rule out not being able to find the file.  If MJ clears your library, then the have been moved or removed.  If this is the case, select "File/Library/Import Media"  Make sure yu have the right path in the search box, then hit "Start Search".

If the above doesn't help, try looking in the playlist and make sure that you don't have any Smart Lists load or enabled.
