MKVs suddenly are crashing MC
« on: March 10, 2010, 07:17:52 am »

I've been watching MKVs on my system without a hitch for a while.

Suddenly, when I play an MKV it crashes MC.

Any ideas?

How do I create or find the log?

I was having the same problem. MC was crashing every time I opened up a 2nd mkv. I uninstalled Haali, then went here and downloaded and installed the latest version. Now things seem to be working better.

Thanks for the help but unfortunately it didn't work.

I still can't play MKV files.

By the way, I did send the log Yaobing, any progress?

I assumed you were having a weekend.

Probably not related but had MKV hanging MC and it was because at some point I'd changed the Video renderer from Haali - changed it back and all was fine.

I spoke too soon. Last night MC was back to crashing on every mkv I tried to play (first one always plays fine. subsequent ones crash MC).

I'll try using the Haali renderer. Does JRiver have any more concrete plans to make an mp4/mkv splitter?

I fiddled with the codecs last night and MKVs are playing at the moment.

Here's what I am using

Source filter: MPC - MPEG source (Gabest)

Other filters: DivX H.264 decoder & x264 vfw - H.264/MPEG 4 AVC codes

Render: Haali Video Renderer

This may work for you. I spent an awfully long time with combo after combo crashing until I finally got this to work.

Your log shows a crash, but I am still not seeing what caused it.  Sorry.

When you use this new setting, and when it plays without crashing, what filters are actually used (not necessarily what you selected)?  You can see that by going to Right-click menu and choose DirectShow Filters.  You can use "Copy filter info to clipboard".  The reason I ask is that "MPC - MPEG source (Gabest)" is designed for MPEG video, and it probably will not be loaded for mkv.  More likely, it is still Haali Media Splitter that is loaded.

Filter 'Haali Video Renderer'

        Host: c:\program files\haali\matroskasplitter\dxr.dll
        Input Pin 'Input'
Connected to pin 'XForm Out' of filter 'DivX H.264 Decoder'
Major type MEDIATYPE_Video  Sub type MEDIASUBTYPE_YUY2, Format type FORMAT_VideoInfo2
        Input Pin 'Subtitle'

I could spot most of the filters and so forth in the graph, but I wasn't certain about the source.

Is the "Host" line above telling me I am using Haali splitter?

I can post the whole thing if you like.

You quoted the Renderer portion, not the source filter portion.  You need to go to the bottom of the list to find the source filter.  Yes, the "Host" is an indication of what filter it is, so is the filter name (if shown) or CLSID (harder to recognize if you are not familiar with it).

This is Haali Media Splitter -
Host: c:\program files\haali\matroskasplitter\splitter.ax

It loaded a file named The Fast & The Fu.  It's video output (AVC1 encoding) was connected to 'DivX H.264 Decoder' and it's audio output (AAC encoding) connected to 'ffdshow Audio Decoder'.  The video renderer used was Haali Video Renderer (from your previous post).  There may or may not be more filters in between, but it probably does not matter.
