[FIXED] MC crash while saving cover art
« on: April 28, 2010, 11:33:51 am »

Hi, I have tried two month ago MC14 and encountered many bug while saving tag changes (mostly cover art) so I gave up, but when MC 15 went out I couldn't resist to upgrade from MC 13 and I still get the error.

What I actually do to encounter this is :
  • 1: Get a picture from Internet and save it on desktop
  • 2: Do some Photoshop
  • 3: Copy the final result .jpg
  • 4: Right click on multiple files in MC > Cover Art > Paste from Clipboard (Image or Url)
  • 5: MC saves all the tags
  • 6: Do step 1 to 4 again for another album
  • 7: After a save or two MC crash
On the second pass between the first and the fifth file usually MC crash with the previous log.

MC log before crash:

What you need to know is that file size always range from 50k to 100k. Image is from local drive on the desktop. Library and music file are hosted on network drive on \\nas. I am quite sure it has something to do with the fact that the file is on network drive. When the drive has high latency cause of heavy load, MC is more likely to crash fast which would suggest maybe a timeout problem or something. Since the files are FLAC and weight around 40MB the access to a single file for saving the covert art must me maintained longer than with mp3.

Note that I fill this as a bug because it works flawlessly with MC13 same setup same computer same thing and tested.

I also have a question about the fact that when we paste an Image from Disk, the file is deleted as soon as the first tag is saved. Why is the file deleted? It says “Paste from Clipboard” not “Cut from Clipboard”. Can it just be a paste or rename the function in the menu to Cut. If you opt for the Cut instead of the Paste like it is implemented right now, will it be possible to delete the file only after a successful save of every file selected in case of a crash?

I also wonder why we cannot paste an image from network drive like the path "\\nas\image.jpg". It just does nothing when trying to Paste the cover art.

Thank you

Uninstall the third party plug-ins that you are using and try again.

Done and same problem.

With the removal of plug-ins, etc, log file does 130 000 characters and cannot be pasted in the forum.

As a test, would you mind trying with some APE or MP3 files?

It sounds like the FLAC plugin is crashing adding images, but this isn't something we've heard from others.  We might need to get a sample FLAC and image file you're using to see if we can reproduce the crash on our end.  I'm matt at jriver dot com if you'd like to send a sample.

Thanks.

I had this problem also http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=53369.msg363486#msg363486 with MC 14.  This is while I was adding coverart to mp3's.  As a workaround, I ended up changing my workflow, as I still noticed the problem in MC 15.

It is not on specific file and must update twice files to reproduce. I don't think I can do much more than that. As it is stated and Quinox concur, the bug has been introduced in MC14. And MC 15 run witout plugin now and is fresh install and not update, so I'm quite sure it is an MC bug and not an environment problem.

Screen Cast of the bug. (Sorry I did ctrl + C for copy instead of right click copy for the visual menu but I do two ctrl + C one per image logic)

Can you test with the files and MC database on a local drive?

Thanks for the video.  I didn't put it together that you were copying a file from Explorer / the Desktop to paste.

I can reproduce the issue now, so look for a fix in a coming build.

This also turned up another issue that will be fixed:
Fixed: When copying a file in Explorer to the clipboard then pasting it as the cover art for a file in Media Center, the source file could be erased after setting the art.

Coming in Media Center 15.0.34:

Fixed: When copying a file in Explorer to the clipboard then pasting it as the cover art for a file in Media Center, the source file could be erased after setting the art.
Changed: When setting cover art from the clipboard, a string version of a local filename will also be accepted (along with a URL to an image, an image, or a system file object)
Fixed: Pasting multiple files from Explorer to the cover art of files could cause a crash.
