Feature request: Allowing to use Reclock as audio renderer
« on: July 06, 2010, 11:23:59 am »

Hi guys, I'm leeperry from head-fi/doom9. I've recently been sent this URL, showing that it's possible to use DirectShow filters in your media players: http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide

Many people feel that Reclock in KS/WASAPI is the "tightest" audio renderer you can get on a windows PC: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/493678/a-better-sounding-alternative-to-foobar2000-or-a-musing-in-the-realm-of-bit-perfect-streaming/225#post_6682421

To me and my system, after several days of testing, the best player is MPC with Reclock and MadFlac, i try Foobar, Ulilith, KMPlayer, StealthPlayer, XXHighEnd all of them claim to be BitPerfect all of them sound different all of them pass the HDCD flag intact

ReClock uses Kernel Streaming/WASAPI interfaces. BTW, this pair MPC+R provides best sound i've ever heard from PC. So i prefer to use it for music and movies

but regular DS based media players(MPC/KMPlayer/etc) don't allow gapless playback :'(

I opened a thread on doom9 a while back, but it didn't pitch any developer's interest: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=151515

So I see that it's possible to output to a DirectSound audio device, any chance you could allow to output to a DirectShow audio renderer as well please? Ideally, we'd need to be able to use ffdshow audio(that supports custom mixing matrixes and VST/winamp2 plugins) + madFlac + Reclock...and of course gapless playback on top :P

I also hope that it's possible to set global hotkeys for +/- Volume, so I can map them to my Griffin Powermate(which is currently the case in uLilith).

Hope you will consider it,

Best regards.

You can already choose any Directshow audio renderer in:
Options > Video > Audio for Video, DVD, & Television > Playback device

This is an aside, but if you pick 'Same as device used in audio playback' you can use JRiver's audio engine which provides WASAPI, ASIO, or Kernel Streaming along with a high-powered DSP stack with VST support.  I believe this is better than Reclock.

Why would you not want to use MC with WASAPI or Kernel Streaming?  Have you tried it?

Neato, thanks for the swift reply! so I could get gapless playback over Reclock using ffdshow audio for post-processing?

I also hope that there's some "mini" skins, as I like my audio players small and efficient :)

I'm on XP, I'm currently using ASIO4ALL in uLilith as I love how it sounds...but Reclock's just tighter, and I miss that. I will try your own KS renderer as well 8)

But doesn't leeperry want to pass Audio (FLAC I'd assume) files through directshow/reclock not video files?

yep, I currently use PotPlayer for videos...I'm just looking for a way to get gapless audio(FLAC/APE/MP3/WMA) playback through Reclock, using ffdshow/madflac 8)

You can configure audio file types to play in Directshow (along with the filters to use) in Options > File Types.

However, you will get the best sound quality using the JRiver audio engine.

I just noticed this.

You can find mini skins here: http://accessories.jrmediacenter.com/mediacenter/accessories.php

Select:
- Media Center Version 14.0 (the v.15 is not mentioned yet, but the skins work fine)
and
- Mini View Skins  (Total Number in this category: 459)

My current favorite is "Lower Right" (or the similar "Lower Left")

You can also simplify the Standard View mode by disabling and hiding unnecessary features. I have posted an example here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=43993.msg300992#msg300992
