Copying and adding tags from one field to another
« on: August 29, 2010, 10:08:23 am »

For my classical music, I have created one field/column called "composistion" and another called "movement and name". This will work like i.e. "Symphony #1 in A major" and "1 - Allegro". However, for the most part I use the top level "Audio" view when opening MC15, and not the sub-genre I've titled "Classical". Thus, I would like to go back to using the "Name" field also for classical music, that is in the name field I would like to put "Symphony #1 in A major - 1 - Allegro", or something similar.
So my question is, is there a way to batch copy the tags from my "composition" fields to the "name" fields and then also copy the "movement and name" fields so that they appear behind the text already put in the name field? Or does anyone have another suggestion?

I sort of suppose this can't be done, but I'd be thankful for any suggestion. I also hope I made my question clear.

MC supports Excel type formulas (using a = to indicate a formula)
Try this on 1 track first!
Edit the name field, type
=[composition] – [movement and name]
The moment you have the right formula/layout
-   copy the formula
-   select all the tracks
-   apply the formula (multi line edit)

I tag my classical music a bit different.
I’m not interested in the content of the CD, I’m interested in compositions
If needed the title of the CD can be preserved in the Comment or the Original Title tag
I use Album for the composition and Name (title) for the movements
This allows me to use the standard views and fields

Good advice from Vincent as always.

Here are some screenshots showing how I use tags for classical music.

I put the composition name into both the Album and Work name tags.  I put an abbreviated movement name in the [Name] tag.

To get the most out of PC audio, you should understand what can be done and decide how you want to use MC.   You may want to experiment a bit before you spend a lot of time ripping and tagging your files.
