Having an issue with getting data ported over to my new system.
« on: January 27, 2011, 07:38:58 pm »

I got a new pc. I'm taking my library from my old system and moving it to the new one.

Old pc:
Files were stored on my external drive (F).

New pc:
Plenty of room on the main, so I copied all my music from F to C. F will now be my backup.

I installed Media Center on the new system. Restored library. I'm seeing duplicates of everything, half of them pointing to F (which are not found), and the other half pointing to C, and are found. This is expected behavior, because I changed the settings in the Options to now look at C for everything.

The problem is this: All of my Number Of Plays, Last Played stats are back to zero, and this isn't what I want. The Ratings are there, and all the other fields seem to be filled out as expected...just not the Number Plays and Last Played.

What am I doing wrong here, and how can I fix it?

It sounds like your settings were stored in MC's library, but not in the files.  In options, you could change this.  "Store tags in files" or something like that.  MC Options has a search window.

Then you'll need to use the Library Tool called "Update tags from library".

You moved the files outside of MC, then told MC to import new files.

I'm not sure what the best fix is, given what you've done. If it can be done over again, I would do this:

  • Backup library on old system.
  • Move external drive to new system as drive F.
  • Restore library backup on the new system.
  • Verify all files are in the restored library.
  • Use Rename, move and copy files with the "Copy and update database to point to new location" option to copy the files from drive F to C.

Restore from a Library backup and start over (not the files, just the MC library).

DO NOT import the new files in C.
"Move" the files in inside MC (the broken ones) to their new place on C.  This should be easy via Find-and-Replace on the [Filename] tag, which you can do from within the Rename tool, as rick explained.
