MC Frequently Crashes
« on: March 05, 2011, 01:27:20 pm »

I have posted this previously but never received a satisfactory answer.

I started up MC15 to ensure that I had the most recent version.  I clicked on "About Media Center" to check the version and confirmed I had the most recent version.  When I tried to close the pop up window that showed the version, MC 15 crashed.

I then downloaded and installed MC16 (160042).  When I went to install the licence, MC16 crashed. But I did get the licence installed on the next attempt.

MC in all of its versions is the single most crash prone piece of software I have ever owned.  I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it more times than I can count as that is the advice that I keep getting that will solve the problem.  It never has.

Don't get me wrong, I love the program and have been running it for years.  I am a loyal customer.

But can you please get MC working so it does not crash at least once every session?

I am running Windows 7 and don't think that I have anything particularly unusual on my system other than perhaps that I run 2 monitors.

Thanks

I had thought that MC15 and MC16 were able to run on the same computer.

Having installed MC16, I now find that I am unable to run either of them.  I can run them but they both crash shortly after they start to run.

I am going to uninstall MC16 and hopefully that will help.

If you have IE9 RC installed, please read a few of the other threads.

If not, please see the link called "Stability" in my signature.

MC15 and MC16 can co-exist.  The library cannot be shared by both.

Do you have any Apple files in your library?

The last time you reported a problem it seems that you thought it was iPod related:

I don't have IE9 installed.

Uninstalled MC16 and MC15 at least now runs.

I did not have an ipod connected at the time.

By apple files, do you mean M4A or Apple lossless?  Or simply itunes downloaded files?  I don't buy files on itunes so don't think that is a problem.

M4A or M4P or any other Apple format.

I do have a fair amount of m4a files as, when I first started running MC, they took up less space than mp3 files (for a given compression level).  I ripped my CD collection to m4a files using MC.  Out of my 500+ Gb music collection, I would expect that about 25% is in m4a format.

As hard drive space is no longer at a premium, I now primarily use 320K mp3 files (I had problems with Apple lossless on MC so haven't used it other than with a few CD's I ripped).  I generally listen to music on an iPod as I travel a great deal (on the road 2 weeks/month) so file compatibility with an iPod is critical.

Does MC have a general problem with m4a files, i.e. is that the basis for MC constantly crashing?

I just don't have the time to re-rip 1,000 CD's.

BTW, although I purchased MC 16, I uninstalled it because it appeared incompatible with my existing MC15 installation, notwithstanding the indication that a dual install would work.

It completely destroyed my MC15 library which I recovered from a back up but it was a real pain.

A dual install will work fine, but it sounds like M4A files are the problem.  Please try 16.0.55 from the top of this board.

MC16 won't cause a problem with an MC15 library, but the MC16 library won't work with MC15.  Maybe that's what you mean.

M4A or M4P or any other Apple format.

[nerdmode]
M4A is not an Apple format.  It is simply a MP4 file which Apple renamed M4A to denote audio-only files.  Same goes with M4P.  M4P is just a MP4 where the internal audio or video streams are encrypted with FairPlay DRM.  Technically, there is no difference between MP4, M4A, M4V, M4P, M4B, or M4R files.  They're all just MP4 files.

While the MP4 file format was based, in part, on Apple's MOV container, it is an open standard controlled by international standards bodies.

In fact, while most people think of AAC (the codec used in most of those Apple M4A files) as an "Apple" compression scheme, it actually has very little to do with them.  It was actually developed by AT&T Bell Laboratories, Fraunhofer IIS, Dolby Laboratories, Sony Corporation and Nokia, and is part of the MPEG-4 standard.  Apple just happened to select AAC as the codec used for songs sold on iTunes, and wrapped them in MP4 containers.  They used the standards.

MC 16.0.63 has native Apple format support.  Please try it.
