Unable to restore license in MC 13.0.172
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:35:30 am »

Hi guys,

I had to restore my license after moving from my old Win7 box to a new Win7 box.  Unfortunately after trying the internet restore a couple times, I keep getting the message:

Error restoring Media Center license:
Invalid license, error code=22

The file to register downloaded is called:
Media Center13-119928.mjr

What's going on?  Is there a trick to it?

Please read about licensing in the Purchase link above.  An mjr file is an Install Key.  It's good for 14 days.  After that, you'll need to use your Registration Code at the Restore page.  The version of the program and the license must match.

I've read all I can find on the Purchase link and the process seems fairly straight forward, but it's not working.  I still get the error code=22 and I have no idea what a code 22  means.  This is a new computer so I went to the website and clicked restore.  Entered my Registration Code, and it sent me an email with the following text, and my .mjr file.  I click on my .mjr file and get the error code=22.  The .mjr file is for version 13, and I have 13.0.172 installed which is the same version of Media Center I had installed on my old computer.

I now also have 8 restores left.. and I haven't been able to install yet :(

What am I doing wrong?  The first time I installed and tried this, I had IE9 RC installed.  Today when I tried, I uninstalled IE9 before doing the restore but still the same result.

Cheers..

---begin email received-----------
You have recently restored a licence for Media Center 13. There are 10 restores available in each 12 month period.  There are 8 restores remaining at this time.

The restore activates Media Center and installs the license automatically.

The Install Key is attached to this email.  It is valid for 14 days.  To install on another PC, transfer the Install Key to the PC, make sure the correct version of Media Center is installed, then execute the Install Key by double clicking on it.
---end email received (the rest is omitted)-----------

If you have multiple MC versions installed, the Install Key may be run by a different version.  Uninstall all other versions if you can't solve the problem another way.  Especially any versions downloaded from other sites.

But when you do a Restore, the license is automatically installed.

Did you reboot after IE9 uninstall?

Don't worry about using restores.  We can fix that.

The computer I'm trying to install MC on is a fresh install Win7 x64 Enterprise so I'm sure it has never had another version of Media Center installed.

I installed by downloading from this link:
http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/old/MediaCenter130172.exe

I did a reboot after uninstalling IE9 before trying a restore.. but I guess now I'll try uninstalling MC 13 and re-installing MC 13 after the IE9 removal...

You may need to disable UAC.  I believe Media Center 13 was finished before UAC existed, and UAC can cause trouble with registration.

v14 and later fully support Vista / Windows 7 and UAC.

That might have been the issue..

I uninstalled the old version.
selected remove all registry keys during uninstall.

I did not have to reboot.

Then for the re-install, I right-clicked and "run as administrator" for the setup program to avoid potential UAC issues.
Went through the install.. and at the end, I launched Media Center.
Selected restore from file.
Browsed to the .mjr I already received from the restore website/email.

Now it's working :)

Thanks
