There's no advantage to doing that and there are some disadvantages.

Right click on the file(s) and choose Library Tools/Convert format.

While I don't see why someone would want to transcode from FLAC to WAV, I believe that this can be done under Options- Media Network- Client Options- Audio conversions- Conversion (always) or Encode- Uncompressed stream.

Dennis,

What do you mean by "on the fly"?  Library Server, DLNA, Handheld, or CD-burning?

DLNA I have a renderer that will not play flac.

craigmcg: I tried that, and it is still converting to mp3's.

Would you consider having MC convert your FLAC files to WavPack?

EDIT 3:37 PM: Disregard my suggestion because...

Supersnake, I guess you didn't notice this:

If a DLNA device does not play FLAC it will propably not play WavPack.

Dennis,

Perhaps you did not set the actual DLNA conversion options:
Media Network > Options > Add or configure DLNA servers... > Audio >
- Conversion: Always convert
- Encoder: Uncompressed stream (or Uncompressed stream - L16 - No header).

See the attached screenshot.
