When I launch the media server ffrom my home computer behind my Linksys router, I get a ficticious IP address.  How do I get an IP address or user name to contact my serving computer behind the router ?

Hi Ande,

I assume you need to contact from outside your home network (otherwise your internal ip address is perfectly valid). If that is the case, you need to expose the port where you run your media server through your router. Then you'll connect to the ip you get from your provider (or use one of the forwarding services is you have a dynamic IP). On my router (Netgear) this is called port forwarding... some other routers have the concept of DMZ (demilitarized zone) to allow to make things visible from outside..

Make sure you at lest use a custom port, or even better use authentication . In general be aware of the implications of exposing a server to the outside world.
